NTA StarTimes Decoders Prices Channels Packages

NTA Star TV Network is bringing StarTimes, a Direct-to-Home DTH pay TV service in Nigeria. Star TV Network is a collaboration between NTA and its Chinese partners StarTimes of China. The novelty of the NTA StarTimes service is that unlike most other pay TV services in Nigeria, subscribing to the NTA Star TV Networks StarTimes service requires no satellite dish, there is also no installation cost, and of course you do not have to worry about the weather.

All you need is a StarTimes decoder and you will start enjoying over 30 to 70 channels at 1,000 Naira monthly or up to 4,000 Naira monthly. NTA Startimes is currently available in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Aba, Benin, Enugu, Ilorin, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Markurdi, Onitsha, Port Harcourt, Sokoto, Uyo, Yola, and Ibadan. Startimes will be in more cities soon.

Just a StarTimes decoder, no dish required

StarTimes decoder

The main selling point of the NTA StarTimes DTH Pay TV service is that it requires no satellite dish. StarTimes utilises digital terrestrial broadcast technology, DVB-T. No requirement for dish makes cost of StarTimes system cheap for subscribers. All you need is a StarTimes decoder, which goes for around N3,600 with 1 month free subscription into the free bouquet.

The StarTimes decoder is plug and play just connect it to your TV, and you can start watching over 30 channels in your home if you subscribe to the basic package or up to 70 channels for the highest package. Any TV antenna can be used for receiving the NTA StarTimes signals, however an antenna mounted outside (external antenna) will offer better reception and will enable you receive the full Startimes offering. An outside antenna for your StarTimes system with connecting cable now goes for N2,500.

NTA StarTimes signals are more weather resistant compared to satellite pay TV. Whether it is raining, cloudy, or sunny, StarTimes reception will be affected minimally.

GOtv offers a similar service to Startimes and is a direct competitor.

Over 30 Channels

NTA StarTimes comes with over 30 to 70 channels. The channels are carefully selected to target different user needs news, documentaries, live sports, entertainment, Kids, Education, etc. A number of NTA channels are included in the packages like NTA News 24, NTA Sports 24, NTA Entertainment, NTA Education, etc. Local NTA station for the your location is also available. So depending on your location, you may also receive NTA Lagos, NTA Abuja, NTA Kano, NTA Aba, NTA Enugu, NTA Ibadan, or a local NTA station near you. More NTA channels may be added in future. Here are some of the other TV services on StarTimes service:
  • BBC World News
  • MGM
  • Discovery World
  • Kidsco
  • TBN
  • E-Entertainment
  • CCTV News
  • BET
  • Fashion TV
  • MTV Base
  • Bollywood TV
  • BBC World
  • Nickelodeon
There are also a number of local private channels on StarTimes like Silverbird, Galaxy and Channels TV and more are likely to be added in future.

See full StarTimes channels.

StarTimes basic package may be considered crappy looking at the quality of its offering, however considering the price of about N1,000 per month, one will say you are getting a good value for your money. Besides you can pay for a higher package for more quality programming.

StarTimes will appeal to consumers in the entry level end of the pay TV market. These consumers are more likely to be price sensitive and will find StarTimes attractive. NTA StarTimes is a good deal, but the possibility of watching some English Premier League matches (one match a week) live on NTA Sports 24 makes StarTimes an even better deal, especially to EPL fans within the entry level segment.

StarTimes Packages and Prices

Initial subscription to StarTimes from NTA Star TV Network now costs N3,600. This includes the StarTimes decoder and one month subscription into the basic bouquet. There are four subscription packages the StarTimes Basic package is currently put at N1,000, while the highest bouquet is the Startimes Unique package which currently costs N4,000.
  • StarTimes Decoder (with one month free Basic) - N3,600
  • StarTimes Basic Package - N1,000
  • StarTimes Classic Package - N2,000
  • StarTimes Classic Plus Bouquet - 3,000 Naira
  • StarTimes Unique Bouquet - 4,000 Naira

StarTimes coverage and dealership

NTA Star TV Network plans to deploy StarTimes throughout Nigeria within five years of launch. For now NTA claims that StarTimes coverage is in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Aba, Benin, Enugu, Ilorin, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Markurdi, Onitsha, Port Harcourt, Sokoto, Uyo, Yola, and Ibadan.

NTA Startimes coverage will be in more cities soon. StarTimes now have dealers in the cities they operate. Visit StarTimes dealers page for contacts of their dealers throughout Nigeria. Since NTA is involved in this project an NTA branch in any of the coverage cities will be a good place to look for your StarTimes decoder and any information you require about StarTimes.

You can also call their customer care numbers: 09-4618888, 01-2719999 for more inquires and information about StarTimes services.

You can also visit StarTimes website at www.startimes.com.ng

Remedy for NTA StarTimes reception issues

Although we can confirm that NTA StarTimes is live in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Aba, Benin, Enugu, Ilorin, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Markurdi, Onitsha, Port Harcourt, Sokoto, Uyo, Yola, and Ibadan. it is important to note that signal strength will vary depending on your location in the StarTimes coverage area. This is because NTA StarTimes Pay TV service uses the same terrestrial broadcast mast used by a conventional TV station. The closer you are to the StarTimes broadcast station the higher the strength and quality of the signal.

The implication of this is that locations further away from the StarTimes broadcast station will have weak reception. Weak reception will lead to a number of ends. One is that the picture on your TV screen will appear hazy, due to the low strength of the NTA StarTimes signal reaching your TV. Another is that you will not receive the full StarTimes offering. For example, some users have reported receiving less than 20 StarTimes channels, instead of the over 30 channels advertised by StarTimes. This is also a result of poor reception. The last possibility is that no signal will be received at all.

In all cases the remedy is usually an external antenna. An external antenna, preferably one with an indoor booster (amplifier), like a Binatone antenna, will receive the weak NTA StarTimes signal and boost it (amplify) to a good strength and quality for your TV. This will enable you receive clear pictures and audio on your TV. It will also enable you receive the full StarTimes offering.

You can buy your external antenna from the same StarTimes dealer you bought the decoder from or from any reputable store. An antenna with remote rotation functionality may come handy as it will make it convenient to rotate the external antenna for improved NTA StarTimes signal reception remotely from inside the house. StarTimes currently advertise its recommended antenna with connecting cable for N2,500.

StarTimes also currently promote TVs with built-in StarTimes decoder. The Prices is as follows:

  • 21-inches CRT TV - N22,800
  • 26-inches LCD TV - N57,000
  • 32-inches LCD TV - N77,000

StarTimes was established in 1988 in China and currently operates in 8 African Countries, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Guinea, Central African Republic, and Burundi.

NTA Startimes is not in Kaduna, Anambra or Gombe. It has coverage in Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt. NTA plans to have coverage throughout Nigeria within five years, so some people will have to wait for five years for NTA Startimes. That is the downside of terrestrial TV, it takes time to deploy, if it where satellite, one satellite would have covered the whole Nigeria. Some premier league matches will feature on NTA courtesy of BON.

Moreso, transmit signals in all the advertised channels if they are to enjoy patronage by nigerians.

StarTimes will show only EPL matches that are shown by BON members. That is one match a week. If you want 100% EPL you have to go for DSTV Premium at N9,500/month. It may also interest you to know that DSTV has launched a new package for sports lovers called DSTV Compact Plus which goes for N6,800 monthly. DSTV Compact Plus will show 90% EPL matches.

Their customer service is nothing to write home about.

I bought a decoder in June. The decoder stopped working sometimes in July. I have made several calls to their so called customer care but no response. I tried loading a card for subscription but it refused to go even looking at the type grammar used to reply, The text read ' Recharge Unsuccessfully".
My fustration is actually that i was told at the customer care at Fadeyi area of Lagos that i have to pay for the 2 months that I didn't use their service to continue using their service. That sounds hysterical and unbelievable. And the reason given to me was that because i left my decoder on, that it is still reading on their system as been used. Someone help I feel like shouting! Please someone should give me the correct answer. I think the staff at Fadeyi center do not know what to say. PLEASE!!!! PLEASE!!!
The amount is not the issue (how much is N2,000), but the way it was said.
The management of Startimes should not forget that we have options. I am angry.

To me, star times is a package of 'deceit and cheat'. i bought mine in May, my channels were scrambled by June ending and i did not subscribe due to economic factor. For me to subscribe now, startimes customer care was now telling to 'update' my subscription from July till date before i could see the channels. That means i should pay for the service i did not enjoy. To me, this not practical since this is not tenable to other service providers were on ground before startimes arrival.

Even if i had the money to update the subscription, i would rather use it in passing the exploitative activities of the so called startimes across to people.

I will condemn the decoder and as well, i will never beg them to get the issue fixed since there are options out there. Also, they should be thanking their God for the fact that we don't proper consumer protection in this country.

My complaints, however, are that we do not receive Channels TV in Abuja starTimes package as thy do in Lagos though Channels TV has an office in Abuja, please do something so we can have variety local news also the Silverbird signal is mixed up with Rhythm FM. Nevertheless, the StarTimes is good and the price is okay.

This is a great forum with great personalities sharing views positively, that is great. i may not know what ur individual passion are, but i have been able to confirm mine that i enjoyed being used to solve problems by that i learn more and see opportunities where others are seeing problems. Startimes came into lagos sometime in March 2010 and in April i bought mine, which was a wao! to me at such a ridiculous amount, today my company is a dealer and before we sell to you we take time to teach you how to use it and instruct you to reach for any problem(s) you may encounter. this has really helped our business to grow because people keep referring others to us.

My humble advice to this great house, members is that learn to take advantage of opportunities when it comes as a problem, agreed there are room for improvement with a lot of challenges, u might be the one to be used to solve that problem. find out which other value added services u can render to such a growing company and make your money.

In as much as I do not subscribe to people paying for services not rendered. We should realise that often, cheap products and services have inherent implications such as d quality of service & more importantly, d after sales service. In Nigeria, cheap things is synonymous with low quality. In addition,NTA does not have profit-driven, customer-caring attitude bcos it's govt parastatals & has a civil service mentality. Therefore, startimes subscribers should expect d worst possible service for now. Secondly, we know that a new organisation is bound to have teething problems similar to what happened at d beginning of GSM roll out. So take heart & I am sure new & more formidable companies will very soon join & strengthen d competition in d pay TV industry. However, i will encourage startimes to open more avenues for feedbacks such as websites & a very active and responsive customer care manned by knowledgable staff. Currently I use d dstv premium & i am ok with there service. I am willing to switch when there are comparable options at a lower rate which to my mind is not available in d Nigeria market for now. Like GSM we will get there it's just a matter of time. Wish startimes best of luck. -Bayo

If Startimes is truly produced in Nigeria by Nigerians (and not Chinco), then it's really a job well done because I have tested and approved it; let's celebrate what is ours. However, I think the producers need not hide their identity. For a well designed, organized and attractive website at a very minimal and affordable price, you could partner with us at IMPACTKOM Technologies on www.impactkom.com

Really thumbs up to Nigerians for even thinking about our own cable TV rather than depend on DSTV.... However i suggest that more movie channels should be introduced and also the reception problem should be checked because sincerely buying an external antennae to get good reception doesn't may sense...it is as stressful as getting a dish. please it should be looked into especially the western movies channels(at least 2),if MM1,MM2,ACTION,SERIES OR MNET can't be included we should be able to watch Mbc 2 and 4...thank you so much. I appreciate the effort.

More so, they should show latest movies in their E Star channels and avoid this boredom of repeating same movies every time. More so, where is channels 29-41.?

NTA and Startimes should be consumer sensitive as they are in a very competitive market. They should not become complacent because of the limited achievements. They need to know that their major competitors have all reduced prices for both entry and monthly subscription as well as introduced Nigerian language movie channels. DSTV, MYTV & HITV have all reduced prices and improved on local content. What we want Startimes to do are to:
1. Introduce Nigerian language movie channels
2. Bring in more local news channels such as Channels TV for Abuja viewers
3. Eliminate Chinese and other none English speaking channels
4. Improve reception (cracking)
If action is not taken very soon some of us may migrate to your competitors who are now thanks to you are now getting more affordable every day.

Am in Kubwa-abuja. I bought Startimes here in abuja and I enjoyed it for a while before it started to develop signal problem, even with the same Antenna I have even been using to watch it. I was told that Its my antenna and I just have to get another antenna and cable. I purchased a Yagi Antenna from the startimes office in Kubwa, and the problem was never solved. I have been to their office in Kubwa but to no avail. The last time i was there to complain, i met 3 other customers with the same complain. Funny enough, my neighbour has the same problem with his own startime.

What other feedback does startimes need?

My concern is that Startimes is not sensitive to the market they are in and they do not want to appreciate that they have problem with their Signals.

I am affraid that If nothing is done urgently in Abuja and its environs, Startimes will soon looooooooooose all its credibility and soon go the way of DAARSAT.

NTA should be serious. the channels, except for Aljazeerah, are not worth it. The audio quality of BBC is very bad.all the channels being handled by NTA itself have very low picture quality compared to the foreign channels. why trace tropical? why not trace urban. there is no info on programes, no shedule, no time and all other things that make digital tv worthwhile. On the whole, DSTV is far far better. I don't advice anybody to go and waste his money on star times

STAR TIMES MADE US THIRSTY AND THEN WITHHELD THE WATER. I VISITED NTA MANAGER OF THE STATE I LIVE THE MAN WAS OBLIVIOUS OF THE ENTIRE PLAN. IT IS SIMPLE. STAR TIMES IN ONLY FIVE CITIES IS NOTHING. I honestly advice nigerians whom have not yet bought startimes not to waste their money on it. it is fake. In port harcourt, signal problem is a daily occurrance. what you have most time is "no signal" or "not subscribe" and all the rubish messages even when you have paid your subscription. your signal strength will be above 75% yet "no signal" wil still appear. I think fraudulent organisations like startimes will only exist in a lawless country like Nigeria. is unfortunate. PLEASE DON'T WASTE MONEY BUYING STAR TIMES IT IF FRAUD

This is very disappointing. Is Nigeria only made up of 5 cities? NTA is a national station and one would expect it to have national coverage. For an NTA development to take 5 years to cover the country is a failure. If you don't live in any of these cities then you can consider yourself outsider to Nigeria. Be it in communication or ICT, everything center in only few of Nigerian cities.

For the sports channels, startimes will start to shown champions league next season but for the premier leaque, the right is still with DSTV. We are showing some premier league matches live on Setanta Africa. We showed Spanish Kings Cup matches. The 1st Leg match between Real Madrid and Barcelona was show on Setanta Africa and will still show the return leg on the 25th March , 2012.

Good everyone. My name is Robert.A and I'm a startimes subscriber in Lagos. I think you guys are doing a good job when it comes to news and musical entertainment so kudos to Startimes on that, although the music stations are becoming too much thus causing the previous ones to be redundant. I'm not a mega sports fan but I do enjoy the occasional BIG game like the r.madrid vs baca you guys supposedly aired, I wasn't expecting it to be aired so I didn't check. My only request is that startimes should include a movie channel like MBC2 or MBC Action..it is free to air according to http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MBC_2_(Middle_East) so you guys don't have any excuse not to give your subscribers what they want and will obviously cost you nothing..please take the MBC stations that are free to air into consideration...thank you
