You must have heard about the cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN by now. Well, if you have not, it is a policy aimed at reducing the volume of physical cash circulating in the Nigerian economy. Core to the cashless (more like cash-lite) policy is the introduction of daily bank deposit/withdrawal limits above which account holders pay huge transaction costs.

Most articles on the cashless policy so far have focused on either announcing the policy or highlighting the challenges facing it. Very few have actually focused on what payment and transaction options are available to you if you require transactions above the daily limits without paying the huge cash handling charges or if you just want to go cashless or cash-lite. In this article we will be highlighting some of these e-payment and e-transaction options.

Cashless Policy Overview

Before going through the payment/bank transaction options, let us first see what the cashless policy is all about. CBN has introduced daily limit for withdrawal and deposit into a bank account. The cumulative daily limit is N150,000 for individual accounts and N1,000,000 for corporate accounts. Above this daily limit you will pay huge cash handling cost of N100 for every N1000 (10%) above the limit.

So, you can withdraw above the limit, but it will be very expensive if not stupid. For example, if an individual withdraws/deposits N1,000,000 in a day, the first N150,000 will be handled free and the excess N850,000 will attract a 10% handling charge (i.e N85,000). So, under the cashless policy you will be debited for N1,085,000 if you withdraw N1,000,000 and credited for N915,000 if you deposit N1,000,000. To avoid the huge charges you have to use e-payment and e-banking options. Note that if a third party deposits cash to your bank account it is you (account holder) that will bear the transaction cost.

For now the cashless policy is piloting in Lagos, although it will commence fully March 30, 2012, when the huge cash handling charges will become effective in Lagos. The cashless policy will be coming to other parts of Nigeria from June 1, 2012.

Now that you have some handle on the cashless policy, let us now go through some of the other channels available to you if you want to go cashless or cashlite.

Internet Banking

Internet banking, also called online banking will enable you handle your banking transactions online. Most Nigerian banks now have internet banking platforms. Internet banking platforms will enable you view account balances, view account activity/statement, check exchange rates, Transfer funds between your accounts within the same bank, and paying bills (DSTV, water, airtime, etc) and taxes.

By increasing your internet banking security with an internet banking token from your bank, you will be enabled to handle more transactions online. For example, with an internet banking token, you will be able to transfer funds to other accounts within and outside your bank on your internet banking platform.

So, if you are serious about going cashless, internet banking with an internet banking token is essential, as it will enable you easily lodge money into other people's account within the same bank or not. In addition, you a can transfer funds way above the limit without having to pay the cut throat cash handling cost. For example, you can use internet banking to lodge your annual rent into the account of your landlord instead of paying cash and incurring huge cash handling costs.

Visit your bank and tell the customer care person that you want internet banking, they will give you a form to fill. You should also ask for an internet banking token as it enables more transactions. Mobile Banking

Mobile Banking is like internet banking except that this time the transaction is done with a mobile phone. It enables you use your mobile phone for your banking transactions and bills payment. However, because of security mobile banking offers limited services and is not as versatile as internet banking with security token.

Most mobile banking platforms will enable you view account balances, view account statement, Transfer funds between your accounts within the same bank, and paying bills (DSTV, water, PHCN, airtime, etc) and taxes. Mobile banking enables you go cashless by allowing you pay some of your bills without having to carry cash. This will enable you keep your daily transaction limit safe for other transactions. Payment cards & POS

Internet banking and mobile banking are more banking biased. They only support limited payment options. If you are looking for e-payment channels that will enable you easily make payment for goods and services without need for cash, then you need to think payment cards and POS. If you want to easily shop cashless at super markets, shopping malls, boutiques, etc payment cards are good options.

Payment cards are cards (usually plastic) that enable you pay for goods and services without the need for cash. Your ATM/debit card from your bank are payment cards so also are cards like Visa, Mastercard, InterSwitch Verve, etc. These payment cards can be used to pay for goods and services at any merchant location where there is a supported PoS. POS (Point of Sale) is a device that enables a seller receive payment electronically via e-payment channels like payment cards.

So, if a super market, shopping mall, filling station, travel agency, salon, boutique, electronic store, etc has a PoS device, you can do business with them cashless. Just give your card to the cashier, he/she swipes it on the device, you authorize payment for goods or service and funds covering your purchase will be transferred from your account to the account of the merchant. It is that simple. Some e-payment cards can support up to N500,000 daily limit. Some payment cards can also be used for online shopping.

Mobile Money

Mobile Money is at the core of the CBN’s cashless policy. It allows users create e-wallet for storing funds on their phone. Once value is stored on your mobile phone, you can use it to pay for goods and services at merchant locations that support mobile money.

The philosophy behind mobile money is that most Nigerians now have mobile phones (not as many have bank accounts). So, if we can have an easy to use e-payment solution that enables people pay for goods and services with their mobile phone we will achieve a cashless or cash lite economy faster.

Subscription for mobile money can be done at a supporting bank or at agent locations. However, mobile money still appears experimental as the only place we see mobile money is on TV adverts.

ATM, Automatic Teller Machine

ATM may not be seen as important to a cashless Nigeria, since most of us only use them to withdraw cash. In fact, I have argued before that ATM machines are leading to more cash into the system, since it makes withdrawing cash very easy and convenient. However, it is important to note that there are other cashless transactions that can be done at ATM machines.

Some ATM machines can be used to pay for airtime and pay some utility bills. So, next time you visit an ATM machine try to checkout its cashless transaction options. Of course, you need an ATM/debit card to use an ATM machine. Visit the customer care person at your bank and ask for one.

So, there you have it, your options for going cashless or cash lite. The CBN cashless policy will reduce corruption, leakages, wastage, and money laundering. It will also create jobs, support it.

Google+ now has over 90 million users

Google+, Google’s own social networking service, now boasts of over 90 million users. This is more than 100% the number of users on the social networking site just three months ago. This information was made available by Google's CEO Larry Page, while announcing the company’s fourth quarter 2011 results.

According to the result, Google made $10.58 billion in revenue, the first time the company is exceeding the $10 billion mark in a quarter in its history. However, Google's earnings fell short of analysts' expectations leading to a 9% drop in the value of its shares on announcement of the results. Google earned $2.7 billion in the quarter.

Google+ user base grew from 40 million three months ago to 90 million, showing that the new social networking service is increasing in popularity fast. Google's CEO also revealed that more than 60% of Google+ users use the product each day and more than 80% each week. Google has been adding new features over the past months to increase the user engagement on the social networking service.

Google has also been integrating its other services to Google+. Google recently launched Search plus Your World, which incorporates Google+ to its search results. Logged-in users can find recommendations and reviews by their friends when they search Google.

However, Google+ was not the only success story for Google, Android also shined. Google revealed that over 700,000 Android devices are activated daily. Also there are now 250 million Android devices in use and 11 billion apps have been downloaded from the Android Market.

Facebook launches Open Graph Apps & Actions on Timeline

Facebook has launched its open graph apps service that will allow an enhanced social engagement for its over 800 million users. Open graph actions allow users share their activities outside Facebook on their Timeline on the social networking site. The Facebook open graph apps platform will enable third party developers build Facebook apps that will share user activities on their site on Facebook.

At the launch, Facebook added 60 new partners to the Open Graph platform. In the list are Yahoo!, eBay, Foursquare, TripAdvisor, Ticket Monster, Kobo, etc. This means that your activities on these sites can be shared on Facebook. For example, if you buy an item on eBay, the information will be shared on Facebook if you choose to do so.

Yes, the service is opt-in, so you have to opt-in for Facebook Open Graph actions for any site you want your activities on to be shared on Facebook. Once you opt-in on any site all future activities on that site will be shared on Facebook. Of course, according to Facebook you have total control of who sees your activities and you can opt-out at anytime.

This launch extends Open Graph actions beyond sharing the music you are listening to or movies you are watching as has been done on Spotify for months now. Now you can also share what you bought, food recipes, places you have been on vacation, the book you are reading, the news you are currently reading, and so on with other Facebook users.

According to Facebook this new Open Graph apps will encourage more interaction as other users engage with the actions. However, not all of us are rushing to get our activities to be broadcast on Facebook, but no doubt the new service will appeal to a large number of Facebook users.

According to Facebook not all your activities on partner sites will be shared, however all of them will be on your Timeline to give you a snapshot of all your activities.

World launches IPv6 new Internet Protocol on June 6 2012

The existing Internet Protocol system, IPv4 supports a maximum of about 4.3 billion IP addresses. As large as this number may look, experts say we will run out of IP addresses soon if a new system that allows for a lot more IP addresses is not implemented on the Internet. The Internet Society has just announced that the IPv6 the next generation Internet Protocol that will do just that will be launched on June 6, 2012.

Each device connected to a network using the internet protocol requires an IP address to communicate on the network. When IP version 4 was being conceived we had only computers to connect to networks, so designers never expected 4 billion IP addresses will be inadequate for the Internet.

But today, many devices mobile phones, tablets, netbooks, TVs, Refrigerators, Cars, etc now compete for the limited IPv4 IP addresses with computers. So, you can now appreciate that we need more IP addresses or the growth of the internet could be stifled.

Although there are techniques for supporting more devices with the limited IPv4 addresses, experts say they add complexity and are expensive. In fact, we are currently using these techniques since we officially ran out of IP addresses in 2011 according to the Internet Society. The permanent solution is a new Internet Protocol that allows for a lot more IP addresses.

The new Internet Protocol is IPv6 and uses 128 bits to represent IP addresses, a lot more than the 32 bits for IPv4. This allows IPv6 to support over 340 trillion trillion trillion IP addresses (3.403×10³⁸ unique IP addresses). Yes, wow a very large number.

Of course, a major transition on the internet needs to be tested. IPv6 was quietly tested for 24 hours on June 8, 2011. Companies like Google and Facebook participated in the test.

So, on June 6, 2012 the transition to IPv6 will officially begin. According to the Internet Society, "Top websites, Internet service providers, and home networking equipment manufacturers" are committed to this transition. Some companies participating in this historic transition include Cisco, D-Link, Facebook, Google, Yahoo, AT&T, Bing, etc.

Most users will not even notice any difference in their experience except for very few users who may experience technical problems.

For 24 hours Wikipedia, the popular free online encyclopedia, will blackout its English version to protest the controversial US bill Stop Online Piracy Act SOPA and Protect Intellectual Property Act PIPA. During the blackout period visitors to Wikipedia will see a black page with a bold white text that says Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge, instead of the article they intend to access.

According to Wikipedia, this blackout is aimed at raising awareness about SOPA and PIPA, two bills in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate respectively that could negatively change the internet as we know it today. This they hope will generate more debate and conversation about the bills.

As laudable as the names of these two bills may sound, opponents say the bills will cause more harm than good. Most opponents of the bill agree with the philosophy behind the SOPA and PIPA bills, but have problem with the implementation and practicality.

The major fear of opponents is that SOPA and PIPA could lead to censorship on the internet. The bills also give sweeping power to the US government to shutdown sites accused of piracy. Under SOPA sites like Youtube, Wikipedia, and Facebook can be easily shutdown on an allegation of aiding piracy.

UTME 2012 Online Registration - JAMB defeating her aim

When a couple of years ago JAMB introduced online registration for its then UME examination, a lot of Nigerians were happy. This was because JAMB online registration made it easy and convenient to register for JAMB examinations. That is why we think that the requirement by JAMB that UTME 2012 registration can only be done at accredited centres is unfortunate.

Reports from various prospective UTME 2012 candidates suggest that one cannot register for JAMB UTME 2012 without going to an accredited JAMB registration centre. We also visited the JAMB UTME Registration website and saw the instruction Registration can ONLY be done at Accredited Registration Centres boldly written.

This limitation negates the spirit of the internet. The philosophy behind putting services online is to give people easy, fast, and convenient access to services. One can from anywhere, at home, in the office, or even while on the move access those services using any appropriate device.

Accessing services online also provides privacy. For example, why should I trust a cyber cafe attendant to keep my information (which could include email, name, photo, and phone number) private? What if my data enters into the wrong hand like stalker who could start stalking me on Facebook or a spammer/scammer, who could start sending unsolicited emails and SMS.

So, by creating a 'walled garden' through her so called accredited registration centres, JAMB has denied all UTME 2012 candidates the convenience and privacy that the internet gives. In fact, JAMB might as well remove the services online and just direct UTME 2012 candidates to designated centres were they will fill paper forms. I bet you it will even be faster that way.

There is no point having a service online if I have to go to a specific point to access the service. It does not make sense to me. That is why we call on JAMB to avoid such nonsensical registration method for JAMB UTME 2013.

A Better UTME Registration Approach

We understand why JAMB wants to accredit business centres involved in UTME registration. They want to ensure that UTME centres have the right tools and to protect UTME candidates from exploitation. JAMB also wants to closely monitor registration centres. However, all these can be achieved without denying me my right to privacy and convenience on the internet.

The solution is to have two types of accounts: a personal account and a business account. A personal account will only allow owner of such account to register only a few people say from 1 to 5 candidates, while a business account will be targeted at the so called Accredited centres and they can register unlimited number of candidates.

This solution enables JAMB to monitor registration centres without disabling people who have the tools and knowledge to complete UTME registration at their own convenience. This solution or a complete reversal is worth considering by JAMB for UTME 2013 registration. What do you think?

Cost of Internet Access in Nigeria January 2012

The price of monthly internet access remained largely the same in the last quarter of 2011 except for a few changes by some operators. In our last cost of internet access report, we noted that Glo’s price advantage was being challenged, the trend continued in Q4, 2011, especially in the high data segment the culprit this time being Swift Networks. Etisalat, perhaps responding to our call, revamped their low and mid-range internet bundles for better competiveness in the segment.

Etisalat reduced the price of its 200MB internet browsing bundle from N1,600 to N1,000 and the 1.5GB bundle from N5,000 to N4,000. Etisalat also heeded our advice to either revamp or retire their 500MB internet bundle in our last report. They chose to revamp it reducing its price from N3000 to N2000, making it more competitive. Visafone introduced a 5GB internet browsing bundle priced at N8,000 during the quarter. Outside these, prices were largely the same, but don’t count on this for Q1, 2012 if current fuel pricing persists.

Cheap Internet Access

Aside the price changes by Etisalat, the prices of cheap internet browsing plans were largely the same. Visafone's 1.2GB internet browsing bundle priced at N3,000 remains our best pick for best deal for cheap internet browsing in Nigeria. However, if you have a GSM/WCDMA(3G) phone, tablet, or modem, Glo Always Macro (1GB) and Airtel Smartphone plan both priced at N3,000 and offering 1GB data remain your best choice.

If you are an entry level internet user Glo Always Micro and the revamped Etisalat 200MB bundle both offering 200MB data for N1,000 are your best choice for browsing especially for feature phones and data efficient smartphones.

Some other compelling Internet packages in this segment include Swift 300MB internet bundle priced at N1,500, the MTN 250MB bundle priced at N1,300, and the MTN 500MB and the revamped Etisalat 500MB internet bundles both priced at N2,000.

High data, Value for money Internet Access

This segment was largely quiet except for some movements by Swift Networks in the very high end of this segment. Glo Always Max, a 6GB 30-day internet access bundle priced at N7,500 is still our best pick for high data users, especially if you are under a Glo 3.5G coverage area. Although with a score of N1.25/MB (it is actually sharing the 9th position) it does not offer the highest overall value, its pricing makes it a lot more affordable.

Swift Networks increased the data allowance of some of their internet bundles, increasing their value. Swift Networks increased the data allowance of their N130,000 bundle from 80GB to 150GB giving it a better score of N0.87/MB and now sharing the best value internet bundle in Nigeria with Visafone's 15GB bundle priced at N13,000.

Social Networking & IM Tops App usage for BlackBerry

For BlackBerry users in Nigeria, Social networking and instant messaging apps were by far their most frequently used apps. This is according to a non-scientific survey we conducted on our Facebook fan page in December, 2011 where we asked mobile users of different platforms to list 3 of their most frequently used apps. While, the competition was respectable between Social networking/IM apps and mobile browser apps on other platforms, users of Blackberry phones were a lot more pro social with social/IM apps having 79.9% popularity, leaving browsers with just 10.8%.

This may not come as a surprise since a lot of people who talk about BlackBerry often emphasis the BlackBerry Messenger, which is an Instant messaging/social networking app. The surprise from the result of the survey is that more respondents used the Facebook app more often than the BlackBerry messenger.

BlackBerry was also the only platform were the Twitter app had a good showing finishing as the third most popular app for BlackBerry subscribers in Nigeria.

Nokia has bought Smarterphone AS, a Norwegian startup that builds mobile operating system for feature phones. However, Smarterphone claims its mobile OS is refined to enable users have a smartphone-like experience on cheap hardware and that could be the attraction for Nokia. The news of the deal, which was completed in November, 2011 came from Ferd capital an investment company that claims it has spent 6.5 million Euros on Smarterphone since 2007.

Feature phones are the top selling internet enabled phones in Nigeria and most of the emerging market because of their cheaper prices. However, recently Android has started eating into feature phone territory. So, these buy could enable Nokia offer more compelling feature phones that can favorably compete with cheap Android phones, helping them maintain their stronghold in emerging market.

It could even enable them build feature phones at price points never seen before. Imagine a N4,000 Nokia feature phone with internet and ability to run apps. That could be possible with this deal.

However, no one is sure what Nokia's intentions for Smarterphone are. Are they going to keep it as a separate platform, or are they going to incorporate ideas from it on their Series 40 platform, or are they just interested in the talent and expertise in Smarterphone AS? Think Facebook apps are the most frequently used apps for social networking and chat in Nigeria? Well, you have to think again, because 2go is actually the top app used for social networking and chat by mobile subscribers in Nigeria, at least according to a non scientific mobile apps usage poll we conducted on our Facebook fan page in December, 2011.

In the poll, we requested our fans on Facebook and Twitter to state their 3 most frequently used mobile apps with emphasis on Android, BlackBerry, Series 40, and Symbian.

2go came second overall with 14.4% popularity, behind the Opera mini/mobile browser apps, which is the most frequently used mobile app in Nigeria with 20.9% popularity. Facebook is the second most popular social networking/IM app in Nigeria and finished third overall with 11.1% popularity.

Note that the poll considers only mobile apps, so it does not mean that 2go is more popular than Facebook. It simply means that more mobile users access 2go via its app than access Facebook via app. This could suggest that some mobile users prefer accessing Facebook via third party apps or mobile browsers. It could also suggest that some mobile users have not downloaded the official Facebook apps.

2go is more popular for Nokia

Although 2go is popular, it is important to state here that its popularity was more pronounced for Symbian smartphones and Nokia Series 40 feature phones. 2go was the second most popular app for both Symbian and Series 40 users. No BlackBerry respondent mentioned 2go, suggesting that Facebook, BlackBerry Messenger, and Twitter are enough for BlackBerry subscribers. 2go was popular for a few Android users.

Social Networking & IM most popular for Mobile users in Nigeria

Social networking and instant messaging are the most popular apps used by mobile subscribers in Nigeria. This is according to a non-scientific survey we conducted on our Facebook fan page recently. Social networking and instant messaging apps with a popularity score of 45.3% beat mobile browsers (31.1%) to second place. However, the Opera mini/mobile browsers were the single most popular app for mobile subscribers in Nigeria.

The survey requested our fans on Facebook and Twitter to list their 3 most frequently used mobile apps. It focused on mobile subscribers running BlackBerry, Android, Symbian, and Nokia Series 40. In all platforms, social networking apps led except for Nokia Series 40 were mobile browsers had a slight edge.

The survey showed that BlackBerry users were extremely pro social/IM with social networking apps having a popularity score of 79.7% amongst BlackBerry subscribers. Browsers only managed 10.8% popularity. On Nokia platforms (Symbian & Series 40), popularity was evenly distributed between social networking/Instant Messaging apps and mobile browsers.

Nigerian mobile subscribers chat a lot and are active social networking that would be the conclusion if we are to believe the result of the survey. Social networking and instant messaging apps have a popularity score of 45.3%. However, you are wrong if you think Facebook is the most popular social networking/instant messaging app used by Nigerians. Actually 2go app was more popular than Facebook app.

Note that this does not actually mean that 2go is more popular than Facebook. It could suggest that some mobile users in Nigeria prefer to access Facebook via other channels like their browser instead using the Facebook app.

Video streaming apps were very unpopular with very few respondents listing them as their top apps.

US SOPA Bill: What will it mean to Nigerians

SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act, it is a piece of legislation in the United States House of Representatives and as the name implies and according to proponents will make life difficult for businesses that thrive on online distribution of copyrighted intellectual property and promote innovation and creativity on the internet. Opponents of the bill, claim the name is misleading, in fact some have called it the Internet Censorship bill, while some others have referred to it as United States' version of the Chinese firewall.

SOPA gives sweeping powers to the United States Department of Justice to take action against websites accused of distributing or enabling the distribution of copyright materials on the internet. Ordinarily, a bill that fights piracy should be welcomed, but most opponents are concerned about the implication of the bill on the future of the internet and its practicality.

Concerns of SOPA Opponents

One major concern is the very vague definition of what constitute a copyright infringement. This according to opponents creates lots of latitude for abuse by the US government and copyright holders. This could make investors to shy away from new ventures as they could be concerned about law suits. SOPA is also said to be copyright holder-biased. For example, a website can easily be blacklisted based on an accusation by a copyright holder. If SOPA stands websites like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter can easily be accused of copyright infringement.

Another concern of SOPA is that it could require Internet Service Providers to monitor web traffic and block websites suspected of distributing copyright materials. The first part is invasion of privacy, while the second constitute censorship. Others are also concerned that SOPA bill will operate in the background making it hard for the public to access its implementation, which could lead to abuses by government.

Another major concern is that SOPA could tamper with some aspect of the Internet Protocol, which could potentially create new security threats for companies and all web users.

Major opponents of the SOPA bill include Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, Mozilla.

SOPA is a US bill, so how would it affect Nigerians?

SOPA may be a US bill, but if passed will have ramifications all over the world including Nigeria.

No more or very little free stuff online

If you currently enjoy free stuff on your phone or laptop, SOPA will likely affect you. It could be music, video, movies, apps, games, ringtones, wallpapers, software, text, just name it. A number of the free stuff we download/stream online in Nigeria are actually infringing people’s copyright.

Websites that offer content online by infringing on copyrights could be crippled by the SOPA bill making their services unavailable to Nigerians. So, we will not find sites to download free stuff if this bill goes through. We will have to get used to paying for content or download only the few content that are provided free by copyright-holders.

This is not bad, if you ask me and even most opponents of the SOPA bill would agree. No one should make money selling, or offering at a cheaper rate, or even offering for free content that he has no right to. Most opponents of the bill are concerned about its implementation and practicality and not the idea.

Nigerian online businesses could be affected

You may think the SOPA bill is American, its major target are businesses located outside the United States. In fact, here is a reference from CNET:

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in a letter to the editor of The New York Times, put it this way: "Rogue Web sites that steal America's innovative and creative products attract more than 53 billion visits a year and threaten more than 19 million American jobs."

Your website might actually be one of the so called rogue websites. If you do any business that shares and distributes content online, you should be concerned about SOPA and determine what it could mean for your business if passed. Well you may be asking how a bill passed in the US can affect your business in Nigeria. Here is how.

SOPA gives the US government powers to take very strong actions against businesses accused of infringing copyright. If you rely on US based companies for stuff like social networking, payment processing, advertising revenue, and web traffic, then you are a small fry. For example under SOPA, the US government can force Google to remove your website from their search index. The US government can also force any US based company to stop paying you advertising revenue or to stop processing your payment.

So, with no traffic from search engines, your social network fan page disabled with your thousands of fans gone, no way of processing payment, and no advertising revenue coming in, do you still have a business? It even gets worse; your domain name could even be seized by the US government.

So far, user reviews from Google+ users including mine have been positive, with most commending how it handles privacy and the control it gives users to select who they share particular contents with. Google+ is also less cluttered.

Here is a brief overview of Google+:

Google+ now offers most of the features that you are used to on Facebook. On Google+ you can share updates, photos, videos, and links just like on Facebook. You can also find and follow your favorite brands and businesses as well as find and share hot contents that other Google+ users are talking about. Games are now well integrated into Google+.

Google+ allows you add your network into groups called Circles and enables you share content easily with specific circles or group of circles. Google+ has pre-labeled circles for friends, family, and acquaintances, but also allows you to add your own labels.

It also incorporates the Twitter following concept, which allows people follow people they are interested in. This makes Google+ easier for celebrities, you do not have to manage two separate profiles, one for personal life and another for fans.

One handy feature on Google+ is the ability to edit your updates, even after publishing. This may seem like a common sense feature, but it is not yet available on Facebook. On Facebook if you make a mistake, you either delete the whole post and rewrite or you just leave it with the error.

Am sure not everybody will get this definition. Sometimes it is very easy to get confused on the difference between a smartphone and a feature phone. Also the line between feature phones and smartphones are getting blurry with advances in technology. For example a new high-end feature phone is as good as if not better than a low-end or older smartphone.

So a more easy definition is that any mobile phone that runs any of the recognised smartphone platforms or operating system can be assumed to be a smartphone. The recognised smartphone platforms are Symbian, Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows Mobile, Windows Phone, Maemo, Palm, WebOS, MeeGo, and Bada. Smartphone prices starts at around N17,000 in Nigeria. However, Smartphones of less than N25,000 may not offer great user experience.

Feature Phone

Nokia X3-02 aka X3 Touch and Type is a feature phone. It comes with a 2.4-inch touch display and keypad. It also supports 3G and Wi-Fi.

Defining Smartphones and basic phones above now makes it easy to identify feature phones by elimination. If a mobile phone is neither a basic phone or a smartphone, then it must be a feature phone. Feature phones are internet enabled phones that do not run any of the recognised smartphone platforms.

Buy from authorised shops

Most authorised dealers offers at least one year warranty on mobile phones.

Most of them also have a return policy. A number of them will allow you return a phone within 24 or 48 hours of buying it for replacement if it develops a fault. Buying from authorised dealers ensures you buy a genuine mobile phone. If a mobile phone does not have local authorised dealers, do not buy their product as you will have anyone to address your issue if any arises.

Colour screen:

NFC - Near Field Communication:

This is a great feature if you intend to send lots of text with your mobile phone. With predictive text you press each key once to enter any of the letters on a given key. WIFI stands for WIreless FIdelity. WIFI is a technology that enables you to access a wireless Local Area Network wireless LAN. With a WIFI enabled mobile phone you can access the internet in a wireless hotspot.

Memory capacity is important if you want to download games, mp3 music, store MMS and store data on your handset. If the capacity is low check, whether memory can be extended. If it can, buy some memory. Some smartphones come with internal memory with no support for memory extensions. So, for such phones it is a good idea to buy a model with as much internal memory as you will need.

Some will come with memory extension but non will be included on-board. So, for such phones it is a good idea to buy a memory card while buying the phone. However, some will come with some memory card included.

Expansion Slots:

Memory slots will enable you increase the memory capacity of your mobile phone as the need arises. You have TransFlash, microSD memory extensions.

VoIP calls:

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. This feature if in your mobile phone will enable you to make cheap calls via the internet on your phone.

TV-out port:

Nokia Asha 200 and Asha 201 are affordable messaging phones from Nokia. They are the cheapest members of Nokia's Asha line. Nokia Asha 201/200 are a good alternative for the Nokia C3, if you can ignore their lack of Wi-Fi support. They both feature long battery life, QWERTY keyboard, FM radio with recording, messaging and social media support, and are based on the Nokia series 40 operating system. Although both phones are similar in size and weight, they are not entirely the same. Nokia Asha 200 is a dual-SIM phone and Nokia Asha 201 is not.

Affordable Messaging Phones

Nokia Asha 200 and Asha 201 features full QWERTY keyboards for fast and easy typing of your messages and updates. They come with support for Social networking, instant messaging, and email. You can create shortcuts to your favourite email, social networking, and IM services, giving you one click access to your communications.

Nokia Asha 201 comes with Facebook Chat and WhatsApp per-installed. However, it is not clear whether the same will be the case for the Nokia Asha 200, but you can always download these and more Apps at the Nokia Ovi Store. Nokia 201 will also feature the Nokia Life Tools.

Nokia Asha 200 and Asha 201 come with 2.4-inch QVGA (320×240 pixels) display rendering 262,000 colours for a crisp view. Like most QWERTY key phones, the width is longer than the length. Both phones feature a modest 2.0 megapixels camera with 4X digital zoom and 176 x 144 pixels video recording.

Nokia Asha 200: a QWERTY key phone with dual-SIM

Nokia Asha 200 is a dual-SIM phone. Like most Nokia dual-SIM phones, Asha 200 features dual-standby capability (meaning you can receive calls on both SIMs without switching). It can also store and remember settings for up to five SIMs, making it possible for users to assign unique ringtones, name, logo, and other settings to each SIM.

Nokia Asha 200 has a hot swappable secondary-SIM, making in it easy for users to remove and insert a SIMs from the secondary SIM slot without any need to switch of the phone.

A feature phone with power of a Smartphone

The big surprise for me was the inclusion of a 1GHz processor on a feature phone like the Nokia Asha 303, making it as powerful as some smartphones. Surely, I did not see that one coming. Series 40 platform on a 1GHz processor should result in fast performance and rapid response of the user interface.

Nokia Asha 303 comes with Facebook Chat preinstalled for chatting with your friends on Facebook and Whatsapp for chatting across multiple platforms. It also comes pre-installed with Angry Birds Lite. It comes with Social media and messaging integration, enabling access to updates and notifications from the homescreen.

Nokia Asha 303 features the new Nokia browser with its efficient browsing system that saves data usage and cost. The built-in browser compresses web pages on Nokia's high-speed servers before rendering them on your phone offering a cheaper web access and with a 1GHz processor the browser will offer a fast performance.

The two smartphones share a lot in common with the major difference being that while Motorola Razr is a GSM phone supporting 3G and HSPA (up to 14.4Mbps downloads), the Motorola Razr Droid is a CDMA phone supporting EVDO Rev.A and 4G LTE. So, going forward in this overview, Motorola Razr Droid will represent both phones.

A Stylish and Powerful Smartphone

Motorola Razr Droid is a very pretty smartphone. It is very thin at 7.1mm, the thinnest LTE smartphone so far. Yet the phone is built to be tough with Kevlar fibre at the back and scratch resistant Corning Gorilla Glass for display. The rest is built from stainless steel. The entire body of the Motorola Razr Droid is coated with water-repellent nano-particles shields, which makes the smatphone splash resistant.

Beyond the beauty, the Motorola Razr Droid is a very powerful smartphone. It features a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, offering more power than the Motorola Atrix 4G and Droid Bionic. It features a 1GB RAM. This combination will result in fast performance and early reviews suggest just that.

Motorola Razr Droid will not be launching with the latest Android OS (Android 4.0/Ice cream Sandwich) at least for early adopters. It will come with Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) with Motoblur, but Motorola have promised Android 4 upgrade Over-the-Air (OTA). Despite running Gingerbread, Motorola Razr Droid will offer a great experience. The Motocast feature enables you stream your media from your computer to your phone.

A Brilliant Display

Motorola Razr Droid features a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED advanced display. The display looks brilliant and crisp, with qHD resolution (540 x 960 pixels). Like the Motorola Atrix 4G and Droid Bionic, the Razr Droid supports the Webtop docking accessory that essentially converts your phone into a portable computer.

The Webtop accessory offers a larger display up to 14-inch and a full size QWERTY keyboard just like a netbook. Dock the Motorola Razr Droid on this accessory and according to Motorola it transforms to a web based PC, enabling you watch videos on the bigger screen and for example to access the web using a full desktop version of Firefox. The accessory comes with a HD port that enables you watch your content even on larger screens.

A full HD camera

The Motorola Razr Droid has two cameras. On the back-end is an 8 megapixel camera with full 1080p HD video recording, an improvement over the Motorola Atrix 4G. The camera also features Autofocus, image stabilisation, and LED Flash. Motorola Razr Droid comes with a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera, basically for HD video calling.

Pricing and availability

Motorola Razr and Razr Droid will be available globally in November, 2011. In the United States Motorola Droid Razr will be available on Verizon at $299.99 for a two year contract while in Canada, Motorola Razr will be available on the Rogers network at $150 for a three year contract. No word yet on unlocked models, which is what folks in Nigeria should be expecting.
