Microsoft Lumia 535 Specs & Price

Lumia 535 is the first Lumia phone to drop the Nokia branding. It is the first Microsoft Lumia and a good upgrade for the Lumia 520. Microsoft Lumia 535 features a 5-inch screen and sports a 5 megapixels camera on the front and back.

Microsoft Lumia 535

Lumia 535 back with Microsoft branding
We have made it abundantly clear that the Lumia 530 was not a good upgrade for the Lumia 520, because while it features some upgrades, there were a few unforgivable downgrades. Microsoft Lumia 535 is an upgrade in every way.

It features a bigger display, adds an LED flash to the rear camera, adds a front facing camera, and comes with dual-SIM option. Microsoft Lumia 535 also offers faster processors and has doubled the RAM to 1GB. And to make the deal sweeter, you get all these at around the same price as the Lumia 520 (around 20,000 Naira).

Hardware & Software

Microsoft Lumia 535 will no doubt offer improved performance with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor. 1GB RAM will also help things run more smoothly and will give users access to more games.

Gaming on Microsoft Lumia 535 will also be helped by the large 5-inch touch screen. The IPS display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 offers better outdoor readability and better viewing angles than most cheap smartphones. With 540 x 960 pixels resolution and support for over 16 million colours, the Microsoft Lumia 535 will be great for watching movies and browsing the web.

Another great attraction of the Microsoft Lumia 535 is the 5 megapixels front facing camera with wide angle lens, which makes it great for taking selfies and making video calls and services like Skype. A 5 megapixels camera is also provided on the back, but now you it adds an LED flash. The only downgrade you have to endure is that the camera will not be able to capture 720p HD videos.

Microsoft Lumia 535 runs on Window Phone 8.1 with Lumia Demin and is available in single SIM and dual-SIM variants. It also offers HSPA+ with download speed of up to 42 Mbps, giving one of the fastest internet speeds at its price point.

Pricing and availability

Microsoft Lumia 535 is not available in Nigeria, but we expect it this November. Microsoft is aiming for this phone to be less than 110 EUR, which should put it at around the same price as Lumia 520. We currently have no information on pricing and availability. Microsoft Lumia 535 Price in Nigeria should range from N18,000 to N27,000 at launch.

Microsoft Lumia replaces Nokia Lumia

Microsoft is dropping the Nokia brand from its Windows Phone based smartphones. Microsoft confirmed that the re-branding will begin in France to tech site, The Verge. This will future Windows Phone smartphone from the company being named Microsoft Lumia instead of the current Nokia Lumia.

Future Lumia phones will have the Microsoft brand replacing Nokia in the front and back.

Microsoft bought Nokia's mobile division in April for $7.2 billion. The deal included a clause that gave Microsoft the right to use the Nokia brand for up to 10 years.

With this re-branding, Nokia Lumia 730 and Lumia 830 will likely be the last Smartphones to bear the Nokia branding. However, Nokia feature phones and basic phones will continue to use the Nokia branding.

Microsoft sold 9.3 million Lumia phones last quarter, a 5.6% increase over same period last year.

Nokia Lumia 530 Review - First Impression

Nokia Lumia 530 aims to continue where the Lumia 520 left off. It is the cheapest Lumia phone available in Nigeria, even cheaper that the Nokia X. I have been trying out the phone in the last couple of days and will be sharing my first impression review here like I promised during the Lumia 530 unboxing.

Nokia Lumia 530

Like I have always said in almost all the article I have written about the Nokia Lumia 530, I do not consider it a replacement or an upgrade for the Lumia 520. So, I will not recommend it for anyone currently using the 520, except if dual-SIM is important to you and you can't afford the Lumia 630.

I also noticed that the Nokia Lumia 530 runs a bit faster than the 520, thanks to its quad-core processor. However, the speed is not very big to be noticed except you place the two phones side by side.

Nokia Lumia 530 is built for first time smartphone users. So, if you have been using Nokia Asha phones and other feature phones or even some of the crappy ultra-cheap Android phones, the Lumia 530 might just wow you. So here is the review:

The Design

Nokia Lumia 530 is comfortable to hold
Nokia Lumia 530 is more compact than the Lumia 520, which makes it more comfortable to hold (for me at least). Looking at it, it appears the compact size was achieved because the capacitive touch buttons have been moved from below the screen to the screen, shaving off some mm in the process.

Nokia Lumia 530 takes the same rounded corner design of the Lumia 630. The back does not offer much friction, but because of the small size you can wrap your hand around for a more comfortable grip.

A 5 megapixels camera is located on the top end of the back with an opening for the speaker on the lower end and Nokia logo in the middle.
Nokia Lumia 530 back
The left side of phone is blank with no buttons or ports. However, two buttons are located on the right side. The first the the volume control and below it is the power button. So, there is no dedicated camera button like in the 520. But, a camera shortcut is available as a default shortcut in the notification center.
Nokia Lumia 530 Left
Nokia Lumia 530 right side
On the top side of the Nokia Lumia 530 is the 3.5mm port for your headphone or earbud. On the bottom side is a micro USB port for charging and data syncing with your computer.
Nokia Lumia 530 top
Nokia Lumia 530 bottom showing USB port
The SIM slots and the microSD slot are not accessible until you remove the back. Nokia Lumia 530 supports two micro SIM cards and up to 128GB microSD card.

With the capacitive buttons gone, the 4-inch screen is very prominent in front. You can also find the openings for the earpiece on top and the mouthpiece on the bottom end.
Nokia Lumia 530 front showing 4-inch display
Overall the design is good. Handling is very natural and easy. using the Lumia 530 with one hand will not be an issue.

The Display

Nokia Lumia 530 offers a 4-inch display with 480 x 854 pixels resolution. This means that on paper the Lumia 530's display should be better than that of the Lumia 520. However, that was not the case.
Lumia 530 front
The display of the Lumia 530 appears a bit more pixelated with a more narrow viewing angle compared to the Lumia 520. The display is great indoors, but not so great outdoors which is usually the case with most low cost smartphones.

However, you can increase the screen brightness of the display for a more manageable view outside. However, unlike the Lumia 520 that has automatic screen brightness that brightens the screen according to the ambient lighting, the Lumia 530 have to be manually set to your required brightness.

The Camera

Nokia Lumia 530 has a 5 megapixels fixed focus camera on the rear side. It is a basic camera and offers no LED flash. Even without flash, the camera takes good quality photos with accurate colour reproduction.

The camera also offers a burst feature that takes several shots allowing you choose the best shot to be saved. This enables you choose the sharpest photo, and remove blurred images. The camera can record up to FWVGA video (854 x 480 pixels).

Nokia Lumia 530 lacks a front facing camera.

The Performance

Like I stated earlier, the Nokia Lumia 530 performs very smoothly. It sports a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and a 512MB RAM. The downside however is the battery. The 1430 mAh battery does not offer enough mileage.

That said, the battery is as good (if not better than) other phones within the said price point. It can take you through a work day of moderate use. It can take over 5 hours of browsing on full charge.

I used it as a Wi-Fi hotspot for over 4 hours and still had about 40% charge left.

Nokia Lumia 530 comes with 4GB built-in storage, but only about 1GB is free for the user. You can upgrade the storage to up to 128GB via microSD memory card. It is a good idea to buy a memory card for your Lumia 530.

The Software

Nokia Lumia 530 runs on Windows Phone 8.1, which brings some improvements. The most notable is the Notification centre, which gives you one click access to all your notifications from messages.
Lumia 530 Windows Phone 8.1 UI
The notification centre also comes with four shortcuts. The phone comes with default shortcuts, but you can change it to whatever feature you want using the notifications+actions option in settings. The notification centre also gives you one click access to settings.
Lumia 530 notification centre
With the capacitive buttons gone from below the screen, they are now located on the lower part of the screen. There functions still remain the same.

With the screen locked, clicking the power button takes you to the lock screen. Swiping up the lock screen gives you access to the Live Tiles. Swipe left to access the list of apps and down to access the notification centre.

The software runs smoothly. Loading an app may take seconds, but once loaded they run surprisingly well.

Communications

Mobile phones are primarily for communication and Nokia Lumia 530 performs quite well in this department. Call quality is good with fast data on both SIMs. Unlike most cheap dual-SIM smartphones that offer 3G only on the primary SIM, Lumia 530 offers fast 3G data on both SIM cards, which is a plus.
Lumia 530 UI showing fast 3G support for SIM 2 or Secondary SIM
The network that offers the best data deals might have network issue sometime. With Nokia Lumia 530, you get fast internet on both SIM cards, ensuring you continue to browse in highspeed whether your preferred network is having a network issue which can be quite often in Nigeria.

Nokia Lumia 530 can receive calls on both SIMs using the Smart Dual SIM. So if you are receiving a call on a SIM and someone calls you on the other SIM, the call is forwarded to the current SIM you are using. However, this feature is not available automatically, you have to go to the network+ option in settings for the option.
Nokia Lumia 530 Smart Dual SIM settings
Lumia 530 selecting Smart Dual SIM option
Video streaming is very smooth on the Lumia 530 whether you are using 3G or Wi-Fi. I also found it very useful as a Wi-Fi hotspot. I connected my laptop and phones successfully to the hotspot. Up to 8 devices can be connected.

Conclusion

Nokia Lumia 530 is a good entry level smartphone. It suffers from similar issues as other cheap phones like low battery life and poor quality display, but still manages to excel in some key areas with a smooth performance and high speed internet on both SIMs. The camera also offers better photos than most phones around the same price even without flash and autofocus the burst features ensures blur-free photos.

I will recommend the Nokia Lumia 530 for first time smartphone users. If you have been using Nokia Asha phones or a feature phone, Lumia 530 is a step forward and good value for money. However, if you are using the Lumia 520 it is not much of an upgrade.

Nokia Lumia 530 Unboxing

Nokia Lumia 530 is now the cheapest Lumia phone in Nigeria and at a price of about 16,500 Naira is even cheaper than the Nokia X. Nokia's former cheapest Lumia, the Lumia 520 was a big hit, so we expect the Nokia Lumia 530 to maintain that legacy. We will be unboxing the Lumia 530 here and sharing what is inside the box. We will be sharing our first impression review in a couple of days.

Nokia Lumia 530

In our Lumia 530 vs Lumia 520 article we made it clear that Lumia 530 is not an upgrade for Lumia 520. Having finally tested out the Lumia 530, we now have more facts to justify that stand. Lumia 530 is recommended for users of Nokia Asha phones and feature phones and not as an upgrade for Lumia 520.

The Unboxing

Nokia Lumia 530 comes in a flat box that looks more like a DVD writer. The box opens like a CD bay and you pull it out the way you would open a match box.

Once you pull out the box, you catch the first glimpse of the phone covered in a Polythene wrap.
Pulling out Lumia 530
Grab the Nokia Lumia 530 and pull up the platform it sits on to access the manual and the rest of the accessories.
Lumia 530 Box opened
Included accessories are the USB charger and a 1430 Li-ion battery. I did not see any earbud (ear phones), which is strange as I saw earbuds in models sold in other countries. I do not know whether this is peculiar to my unit or to all models sold in Nigeria.
Nokia Lumia 530 with Accessories
This however is not a big issue for me since I have more earbuds than I need lying allover the place. But, if you are buying Nokia Lumia 530 in Nigeria, you have to keep this in mind.

Nokia Lumia 530 looks good. We got the dark grey model, but you can also buy in green or orange. It is more compact than the Lumia 520 and fits very well in my hand and pocket. The physical soft keys are missing and are now part of the touchscreen.

Nokia Lumia 730 Dual-SIM

Hardware & Software

If you are searching for a branded smartphone with a reasonable price, Nokia Lumia 730 is a good option. It replaces the Lumia 720, which seems not to be in the market anymore these days. It comes with the same sleek design of the Lumia 720, actually slightly slimmer at 8.7mm.

Nokia Lumia 730 has a brilliant 4.7-inch AMOLED display with 720 x 1280 pixels resolution with ClearBlack for better readability outdoors. The quality of the display is great with good color reproduction and wide viewing angles that come with distinct readjustment capabilities.

Inside, the Lumia 730 Dual-SIM is very similar to the Lumia 830, that is aside the fact that it is smaller and without a Pureview camera. It offers you the same Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim update powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1 GB of RAM and support for up to 128GB microSD card, just like the Lumia 830.

Nokia Lumia 730 retains the 6.7 megapixels rear camera, but improved with better photos in low light and now with full HD (1080p HD). However, the 5 megapixels front facing camera is the talking point in the camera department.

It offers wide-angle shots which ensures more of your friends can be captured in a selfie or allow the whole family to engage in a Skype call. It can also record full HD videos (1080p HD).

All in all, Nokia Lumia 730 Dual-SIM offers highend performance at a reasonable price. It essentially offers you the Lumia 830 platform at a cheaper price. If you don't mind the camera down-grade, and the smaller screen, the Lumia 730 is great for you. There is also a Lumia 735, which drops dual-SIM, but adds faster 4G LTE data and wireless charging support.
