Micro-SIM - A must for Smartphones of 2013 & Beyond

If you are planning to buy a smartphone in 2013, you should also be prepared to swap your SIM. This is because your current Mini SIM (normal SIM) will likely not fit into your new smartphone as most recently launched smartphones feature the smaller Micro-SIM. If you do not have a Micro-SIM already, you will have to visit the customer care centre of your mobile network to swap your Mini-SIM to Micro-SIM.

Note that latest Apple Smartphone and tablets like the iPhone 5, iPad Mini, and iPad 4 supports the much smaller Nano-SIM, which you can also get from your mobile network.

The Micro-SIM Era Begins

The Micro-SIM is more than 50% smaller than the Mini-SIM, leading to space savings that can result in sleeker smartphones with more features. Despite its smaller size, the Micro-SIM comes with more storage for storing your data and for housing mobile services of the mobile operator. Micro-SIM is also more efficient, resulting in less drain on the battery.

Almost all highend smartphones launched in 2012 required a Micro-SIM. But since 2013, this trend has been shifting to mid-range, low-end, and now budget smartphones. One clear indication that we are entering the Micro-SIM era is the recent announcement of by Nokia of the Nokia Asha 501.

Nokia Asha 501 is a budget smartphone expected to retail at around 15,800 Naira, but requires a Micro-SIM. If a smartphone at 15,800 Naira now boasts of Micro-SIM, it is only a matter of time before more smartphones at similar price point or even cheaper feature phones and basic phones begin to spot Micro-SIM.

This means if you are planning to buy any of the recently launched smartphones or future releases for that matter, you should have it in mind that Micro-SIM will likely be required.

How to Get a Micro-SIM

To swap your Mini-SIM to Micro-SIM, visit the nearest customer care centre of your mobile operator and request for a SIM swap. According to the website of some of the mobile operators that I visited, the Micro SIM Swap is free, but you may be required to buy recharge card in practice.

Cheap smartphones are limited in performance, but are still good introductory smartphones.

Online stores usually have price filters. These price filters enable you select the price range within your budget that way only smartphones priced within that range will be displayed, saving you time. You can also select products to be listed from lowest price to highest price or vice versa.

Visit the Store

Now that you are better informed, you can now visit an online store like Jumia. If you already have a smartphone in mind simply enter the name in the search bar to see whether the product is available. If you have a particular brand in mind, you can select the brand via the product category to show all mobile phones available by that brand.

If you have a budget, click on the price range that your budget falls into to reveal all mobile phones within the price range. Buy the smartphone

If you are happy with the details of the smartphone, you can then add to cart at the online store. At Jumia, clicking on the buy now button will add your chosen smartphone to the cart. Payment for online shopping can be done online using debit cards. However, Jumia offers also bank deposit and depending on your location payment on delivery.

Payment on delivery is available in Lagos and Abuja. In the case of bank deposit, you order online, then you are given 2 days to make a bank deposit or the order will be cancelled.

Receive your Smartphone

If your order is confirmed, you will receive your Smartphone within 2 to 5 days. When you receive the smartphone confirm that it is the actual brand, colour, and model you ordered. Do not open the packaging if you received the wrong smartphone. Then contact customer care of the online store for how to return the smartphone for a possible refund or replacement.
