Micro-SIM - A must for Smartphones of 2013 & Beyond

If you are planning to buy a smartphone in 2013, you should also be prepared to swap your SIM. This is because your current Mini SIM (normal SIM) will likely not fit into your new smartphone as most recently launched smartphones feature the smaller Micro-SIM. If you do not have a Micro-SIM already, you will have to visit the customer care centre of your mobile network to swap your Mini-SIM to Micro-SIM.

Micro SIM, Nano SIM, MiniSIM

Note that latest Apple Smartphone and tablets like the iPhone 5, iPad Mini, and iPad 4 supports the much smaller Nano-SIM, which you can also get from your mobile network.

The Micro-SIM Era Begins

The Micro-SIM is more than 50% smaller than the Mini-SIM, leading to space savings that can result in sleeker smartphones with more features. Despite its smaller size, the Micro-SIM comes with more storage for storing your data and for housing mobile services of the mobile operator. Micro-SIM is also more efficient, resulting in less drain on the battery.

Almost all highend smartphones launched in 2012 required a Micro-SIM. But since 2013, this trend has been shifting to mid-range, low-end, and now budget smartphones. One clear indication that we are entering the Micro-SIM era is the recent announcement of by Nokia of the Nokia Asha 501.

Nokia Asha 501

Nokia Asha 501 is a budget smartphone expected to retail at around 15,800 Naira, but requires a Micro-SIM. If a smartphone at 15,800 Naira now boasts of Micro-SIM, it is only a matter of time before more smartphones at similar price point or even cheaper feature phones and basic phones begin to spot Micro-SIM.

This means if you are planning to buy any of the recently launched smartphones or future releases for that matter, you should have it in mind that Micro-SIM will likely be required.

How to Get a Micro-SIM

To swap your Mini-SIM to Micro-SIM, visit the nearest customer care centre of your mobile operator and request for a SIM swap. According to the website of some of the mobile operators that I visited, the Micro SIM Swap is free, but you may be required to buy recharge card in practice.

Here are a few Smartphones that require Micro-SIM. Ask the retailer if the smartphone you are buying requires a Micro-SIM and do a SIM swap ASAP:

Here are some great smartphones launching in Nigeria in the Month of May, 2013:

Nokia Lumia 520 & Lumia 720

First out of the gates in May were the duo of Nokia Lumia 520 and Nokia Lumia 720. Both smartphones are exciting for similar and different reasons. Both offer great user experience at a great price.

Nokia Lumia 520 Low Cost WP8 Phone

Considering the budget of most smartphone buyers in Nigeria, the low cost Nokia Lumia 520, which comes at a price range of between 29,000 Naira and 35,000 Naira is more exciting. This is about the same price that a onetime Nokia bestseller, the Nokia 5230 launched a couple of years ago.

Nokia Lumia 520 features Windows Phone 8, a 4.0-inch super-sensitive touch display, a 5MP camera, and the best of Nokia's hardware, technology, navigation, and entertainment. Plus it is available in brilliant colours to match any style and taste.

Nokia Lumia 720

Nokia Lumia 720 also runs Windows Phone 8. It offers some of the best features of the flagship Nokia Lumia 920 at a more affordable price. In fact, I am sure that if Samsung were to name this phone they would have named it the Nokia Lumia 920 Mini.

Nokia Lumia 720 is one of the most elegant mid-range smartphones, just 9mm thick and at a price range of between 49,000 Naira and 55,000 Naira it is one of the best value mid-range smartphone as well.

BlackBerry Q10

BlackBerry Q10

BlackBerry Q10 is arguably the best smartphone with a physical QWERTY keyboard and one for the die-hard fans of the physical QWERTY key. Its major target is the BlackBerry loyal base. If you are currently using any of the BlackBerry Bold smartphones like the BlackBerry Bold 9900 (Bold 5) and BlackBerry Bold 9790 (Bold 6), the BlackBerry Q10 will be awesome for you.

BlackBerry Q10 features a 3.1-inch touch display and a nice physical QWERTY keyboard as well as a good 8MP camera. BlackBerry Q10 will launch officially later in May at a price range of around 110,000 Naira, although some stores are currently selling it at much higher price of up to 180,000 Naira. I advice you wait for the official availability or you can preorder BlackBerry Q10 online at the same price of 110,000 Naira.

Best Smartphones for Late Teens

Want to buy a smartphone for your teenage child who just successfully passed an important milestone in his/her life. Did he/she just gain admission into a university or passed WAEC, NECO, or JAMB with flying colours? Or you just want to buy a gift for Children's day. A smartphone can be a great gift to reward and encourage him. Here I will recommend four smartphones to consider.

Buy Smart Phones Online

Before I share the list, I will like to say that my focus here are young people in their late teens. I also placed a cost ceiling of N25,000. I also considered the cost of internet access, which you will have to pay for him/her to maintain the phone. In case you want to understand smartphones better, read our how to buy a smartphone article. Now the list follows:

Nokia Asha 311

Nokia Asha 311
Nokia Asha 311 is the ultimate smartphone for children in their late teens. It comes with a powerful processor and a responsive 3.0-inch capacitive touchscreen. It comes bundled with 40 free EA games, so he can kill time when bored. Nokia Asha 311 features fast 3G internet (up to 10.2mbps) so he can find the information he wants fast.

The phone is also well integrated with social media for keeping in touch with friends on Twitter and Facebook. He can also download and install Whatsapp for free SMS and instant messaging with friends. Nokia Asha 311 is data efficient, so N1000 monthly data bill will be okay with responsible use.

Nokia is also currently offering the Nokia Asha 311 with 6 months free internet access. So, if you buy Asha 311 this Christmas season, you will not have to worry about paying for internet access for the next 6 months. The phone also offers Wi-Fi and a 3.2 megapixel camera. Nokia Asha 311 comes at a price range of N17,500 and N20,000.

LG Optimus L3 E405

LG Optimus L3 E405
This is another great smartphone for people in their late teens. LG Optimus L3 E405 features 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen (the largest in this list). It also features fast 3G Internet (up to 3.6mbps) with lots of free apps and games at the Google Play Store. LG Optimus L3 E405 also features a 3.2 megapixel camera.

A note of caution though, Android is known to consume lots of data which means you may have to pay more on data cost. So, you need to instruct your child to use data responsibly and to limit downloads on music and movies as well as turnoff non-essential apps.

You can also advice him/her to downlod and use the Opera Mini browser. The LG Optimus L3 E405 comes at a price range of N16,500 and N21,000.

Nokia Asha 305

Nokia Asha 305 Dual-SIM
This is the cheapest phone in the list and should be seriously considered if you are on budget. The downside to this phone is that unlike the rest of the smartphones in the list, Nokia Asha 305 does not feature 3G internet, but GPRS/EDGE (up to 0.26mbps). So, downloads will appear slow.

However, browsing is fast thanks to Nokia's Xpress browser, which uses cloud compression technology to compress data reducing data cost and increasing speed. Nokia Asha 305 is a dual-SIM phone with a 3.0-inch resistive touchscreen and a 2.0 megapixels camera. The battery life is also awesome at 14 hours talktime. This phone also comes with 6 months free internet. The price of the Nokia Asha 305 starts at around N13,500.

Smartphones are mobile phones with advanced computing capability. If you still need to know more about smartphones you can read our how to buy a smartphone article. However as a guide any mobile phone running platforms like BlackBerry (BlackBerry Phones), Android (eg. Samsung Galaxy Phones), Windows Phone (eg. Nokia Lumia Phones), iOS (eg. iPhone 5), Symbian/Belle (eg. Nokia 808 Pureview), Asha Touch (eg. Nokia Asha 311), Bada (eg. Samsung Wave 3), Windows Mobile, Maemo, Palm, WebOS, and MeeGo (eg. Nokia N9) are regarded as smartphones.

Be informed

To shop online you need to know what you want. This is because if you make the wrong choice, you will receive the wrong product and returning products you bought online is not that easy. Decide the features you want, the platform, and/or brand you prefer.

Online stores do not always offer all the details. For example, you may want to know whether the smartphone has a mobile hotspot feature. The good news is that tech blogs like NaijaTechGuide holds this kinds of information that will enable you have a good idea about the product you are buying. You can also read reviews online or at the online store.

Budget vs Features

I hope you did not miss that class in Economics, where we were thought that human wants are many, but resources are limited and the scale of preference bla bla bla? Well, smartphones are available in categories depending on how much you have. Flagship smartphones start at around N70,000 and offer premium experience.

Mid range smartphones also have classes with the upper mid range starting at N50,000 and the lower mid-range starting at around N25,000. At the bottom of the smartphone family are the low cost, entry, budget, or cheap smartphones (a.k.a. the I Big Pass my Neighbour Smartphones). Cheap smartphones are limited in performance, but are still good introductory smartphones.

Online stores usually have price filters. These price filters enable you select the price range within your budget that way only smartphones priced within that range will be displayed, saving you time. You can also select products to be listed from lowest price to highest price or vice versa.

Visit the Store

Now that you are better informed, you can now visit an online store like Jumia. If you already have a smartphone in mind simply enter the name in the search bar to see whether the product is available. If you have a particular brand in mind, you can select the brand via the product category to show all mobile phones available by that brand.

If you have a budget, click on the price range that your budget falls into to reveal all mobile phones within the price range. You can go through as many options as you want until you find the smartphone you want. Select the smartphone you want. You can also check if the smartphone is available in multiple colours and choose your preferred colour.

Remember if what you had in mind is a black phone and you selected a white one, what you will receive eventually is a white smartphone. Note that different colours of the same model of smartphones may be priced differently. This is usually the case with BlackBerry, but very rare with Nokia and Samsung. The smartphone may also offer different capacities of built-storage, so pay attention to that as well.

Make it a habit to read the full description of the smartphone at the online store. You may also find reviews of the smartphone at the online store. Check for warranties. Do not buy if there is not at least one year warranty on the smartphone. You can visit as many online stores as possible.

Buy the smartphone

If you are happy with the details of the smartphone, you can then add to cart at the online store. At Jumia, clicking on the buy now button will add your chosen smartphone to the cart. If you need more than one smartphone, make sure you indicate the number you want. If you want to buy more products you can click on Continue Shopping button.
