These mobile phones are cheap not because they are inferior but because they are being subsidized by the network operators. For example the lowest priced handset in Nigeria at 1600 Naira, has a 65K colour screen, games, calendar and long battery life. This handset is promoted by Visafone.

Visafone is also marketing another product at about 2000 Naira. According to Visafone public promotion this model has a built-in FM radio, 3 Way call feature, slim speaker phone, 65K colour screen and much more.

Starcomms and Celtel also have similar products on offer. While the Celtel phone goes for about 2000 Naira the Starcomms phone offer goes for about 3000 Naira.

The handsets are SIM-locked and hence can only be used with the SIM of the mobile operator.
