Nigeria took centre stage last week as search giant Google partnered with Infinix mobility, Africa’s leading online store Jumia, and Africa’s leading mobile network, MTN to launch the Hot 2, the first Android One Phone in Africa.

Nigeria is rarely on the centre stage of global tech news, but on August 18, Google with its partners shun the spotlight on the country. The big event was the expansion of Google’s Android One program to Africa and the launch of the first phone to support the standard in Africa.

Google began the Android One program last year in India. The aim of the program was to give buyers in developing countries access to affordable phones with great build and high end performance as well as timely updates to latest Android updates and security patches.

The launch of Android One in Africa will start with six African countries, namely Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, and Morocco with others probably following later.

Hot 2 has gone on sale at Jumia Nigeria for 17,500 Naira ($88) for the base model with 1GB RAM. If you want more performance, you should consider the model with 2GB RAM, which costs 19,500 Naira.

Also at the event the MTN 1GB data plan that costs 500 Naira was launched. The data plan is exclusive for Android One phones, which for now means only the Infinix Hot 2.
