One unpleasant possibility virtually all mobile phone users face is that of losing those precious contacts we have taken time to accumulate. This could result from either the theft of or damage to our devices. MTN SIM Backup is one of those services that are designed to help prevent such an unfavourable possibility.
What is MTN Backup?
This is a service offered by MTN to its subscribers to help safeguard the contact information or numbers on their SIM cards and mobile phones by storing these on a remote server.
The service could save you the stress and expenses that may be involved if you happen to lose your device along with the SIM card. MTN Backup allows you back up or save up to 200 contacts stored on your SIM as well as up to 5,000 contacts on your phone to an online account. This way, you can simply restore saved contacts if you do lose either your SIM or phone, or even both.
MTN SIM backup is more or less like an insurance policy for your contacts. While a gadget protection plan can protect your phone in cases damage or theft, they don’t go as far as protecting your contacts. SIM backup from MTN comes to the rescue.
MTN SIM backup can also come in handy when switching from an old phone to a new one.
According to MTN, you will need either a new MTN Backup SIM or a compatible, data-enabled phone within the telecom company’s data coverage – or both. You do not need to buy a special backup SIM card if your SIM was bought in 2010 or later.
There are more than 400 mobile phones that are considered to be compatible with this service. The supported mobile phones include devices from makers such as Nokia, Apple, Samsung, BlackBerry, HTC, Alcatel, Gionee, Huawei and Infinix, amongst others.
How to Back up and Restore Contacts
The ‘MTN Services‘ option on your phone can be used for backing up your contacts – the option may appear as ‘SIM Services‘ on some devices. First select ‘MTN Backup‘ and then ‘Backup SIM Contacts.’
You will be asked if you wish to proceed with contact synchronisation; select OK. The backup process then starts and, if successfully completed, you will receive your login/account details.
Alternatively, you can do the backup via MTN Backup online portal. The details sent to you will be needed to access your online account when you want to restore the contacts to another phone.
Note that MTN backup does not only backup contacts stored on your SIM, but can also backup contacts stored on your phone (up to 5000 contacts).
How Much is MTN Backup?
