Asus introduced two versions of their gaming phone for 2023, the ASUS ROG Phone 7 and ROG Phone 7 Ultimate Edition. At first glance, the Ultimate model features a sci-fi aesthetic and prominent gaming logos that may not appeal to everyone and could make it feel a bit ostentatious in public.
It offers a massive 6.78-inch AMOLED screen, optimized for an immersive gaming experience. The phone also has a ROG Vision color display on the back, which can display animated text, images, and icons.
The front of the ASUS phone has a flat design, making it suitable for typing and preventing thumbs from sliding off during gaming. The bezels are slightly thicker on the top and bottom, allowing for powerful stereo speakers and extra room for resting thumbs.
It also has an AeroActive portal that opens up when the included cooler fan is attached, allowing cold air to be blown inside the phone for enhanced cooling. Asus claims that the device boost thermal efficiency by 20%, thanks to the a new rapid-cycle vapour chamber.
Furthermore, the ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate sports the AirTrigger haptic controls, which replicate the feel of using physical triggers on a gamepad. These controls can be mapped to in-game inputs, providing enhanced ergonomics and a competitive advantage.
Additionally, there is also features dual USB-C ports, allowing for simultaneous charging and connection of external accessories, making it convenient for gaming sessions.
The Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate features an AMOLED screen that delivers vibrant and vivid colors. With a peak brightness of 1500 nits, the display remains visible even in bright sunlight. The phone covers 150.89% of the sRGB gamut, ensuring accurate and vibrant colors for an immersive gaming experience. The screen performs well, displaying the bright flash of grenades and intricate details of in-game designs.
The phone’s display has a resolution of 2448 x 1080, which may not be as high as QHD+ displays, but it helps optimize battery life. The 165Hz refresh rate, hence, it’s capable of up to 165Hz when required, with the ability to automatically switch between 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz or 165Hz, depending on what’s on the screen. This allows for smooth gameplay, particularly in games that support high refresh rates.
Furthermore, the android phone has a high touch-sampling rate of 720Hz ensuring quick and responsive touchscreen interactions, which is crucial for mobile games that require fast reactions. It also features HDR10+ support, which enhances the dynamic range and contrast of the display, resulting in more vibrant and lifelike visuals.
The Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate features a triple camera setup on the back, with the primary camera utilizing a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 sensor. This sensor, combined with the phone’s image processing capabilities and algorithms, produces good shots in various conditions.
Daylight images are vibrant, colorful, and detailed, with rich contrast. The main camera also supports Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF). This enables faster and more precise autofocus, allowing users to capture sharp and focused images.
However, the other two lenses, including the 13-megapixel ultrawide and 5-megapixel macro camera, are not as capable as the primary camera. The ultrawide lens exhibits lower overall image fidelity, with less crisp details and noticeable noise and graininess, especially in blue skies and shadows. The macro camera allows for close-up shots but can be challenging to achieve in-focus results and struggles with balancing highlights and shadows.
While the ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is primarily a gaming phone, the main camera still delivers good image quality, allowing users to capture decent photos. The camera app provides various creative tools, including light-painting/long exposure modes, night mode, and pro/manual modes for both photography and videography. This offers users the flexibility to control exposure, shutter, and aperture settings, catering to those who prefer manual control over automatic settings.
It also supports resolutions up to 8K at 24fps and 4K at 30/60fps. It features gyro-electronic image stabilization (EIS) and HDR10+ support, hence, your videos will be smooth and vibrant, showcasing a high level of detail.
The front-facing camera of the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate also comes with a 32 MP sensor that captures stunning selfies with clarity and detail. It has features like panorama and HDR that enhance the selfie experience, allowing you to create striking self-portraits and group shots.
Hardware and Software
It features an octa-core CPU configuration, consisting of a 3.2 GHz Cortex-X3 core, two 2.8 GHz Cortex-A715 cores, two 2.8 GHz Cortex-A710 cores, and three 2.0 GHz Cortex-A510 cores. This combination of high-performance and power-efficient cores provides a balance between processing power and energy efficiency.
For graphics processing, the phone is equipped with the Adreno 740 GPU, which delivers smooth and immersive gaming experiences with high-quality visuals.
In terms of memory, the Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate comes with a generous 512GB ofof fast UFS 4.0 storage and a whopping 16GB of RAM. This ample storage capacity allows for storing large amounts of data, including games, apps, photos, and videos. However, it does not have a card slot for expandable storage, so the internal storage cannot be expanded further with a microSD card.
Furthermore, this 5G phone runs on the Android version Android 13 with promise for two OS updates to Android 14 and 15. It also has a powerful 6000 mAh non-removable battery and features fast charging technology. Inside the box, there is also an included 65W charger to top up the phone.
In terms of connectivity, the ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate offers a volume switcher, standby button, and a headphone jack. It supports Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 7, ensuring advanced connectivity options. The phone has an IP54 rating, providing some resistance to splashes of water, but it is not fully waterproof.
