Hardware and Software

Samsung Galaxy Tab has hardware similar to the Samsung Galaxy S phones. It features a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, which combines with a graphics engine to offer super-fast performance and superior mobile communications and entertainment experience.

Multiple apps can be opened at the same time with little or no effect on performance. It runs the Google Android 2.2 OS and offers full flash support. Samsung Galaxy Tab features the TouchWiz 3.0 UI, which is intuitive and gives you easy access to all menu items.

Samsung Galaxy Tab handles your messaging via a well designed email app. The Android Tablet comes preloaded with Google software and apps like Google Search, GMail, Google Maps, Google Talk, YouTube, and Picasa; plus document editors for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF.

Galaxy Tab is also preloaded with apps like Pandora, Facebook, Twitter, TweetDeck, Samsung Galaxy Tab features a Media Hub, where users can rent and buy movies and TV shows. But, this feature may not be available in some countries. More apps can be downloaded from the Android market place.

However, a problem with apps on the Samsung Galaxy Tab is that apps optimised to take advantage of the larger screen of the Galaxy Tab are still scarce in the Android market. But this will probably change soon as more apps are optimised. Android also needs to be updated for better performance with Tablet computers as it seems to be more of a smartphone OS for now.

Display

Samsung Galaxy Tab features a 7.0-inch capacitive multi-touch touchscreen. The Galaxy Tab offers a resolution of 600 x 1024 pixels, lower than Apple iPad. However, because the display is smaller, Samsung Galaxy Tab actually offers a crispier view, taking advantage of its higher pixel density. Unlike the Galaxy S phones that it was derived from, the Samsung Galaxy Tab does not feature a super-AMOLED display, but the LCD display still does a good job.

camera

One major area that the Samsung Galaxy Tab beats the iPad is in the camera. While Apple iPad lacks the camera feature (at least for now), the Samsung Galaxy Tab features two. The main camera is a 3.15 megapixel camera with video ( up to 720 x 480 pixels) recording capability.

Other features of the camera include Autofocus, LED Flash, geo-tagging, and so on. Samsung Galaxy Tab features a front facing camera, which is suited for video calling, but can still be used for taking photos.

The Camera feature requires MicroSD card. So, if none is preloaded, you will have to buy some before you can make use of the camera feature on Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Network, Data, and Internet browsing

Samsung Galaxy Tab depending on available network can switch between 2G (GSM) and 3G (WCDMA). It supports GPRS/EDGE on GSM networks and up to high speed HSDPA on 3G networks.

Samsung Galaxy Tab accesses wireless LAN networks with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n support. The Galaxy Tab features the Android browser with full HTML support and flash support. The browser takes advantage of the larger display and offers fast performance.

Samsung Galaxy Tab supports Bluetooth 3.0 for short-range wireless connectivity. Users can transfer files from/to their computer wirelessly via Bluetooth as well as share content wirelessly with other Bluetooth enabled devices.

Samsung Galaxy Tab also features microUSB 2.0. However, the USB is proprietary. It has a built-in modem, which means users can connect their other devices to the internet with their Galaxy Tab via Bluetooth or USB.

e-reading

Samsung Galaxy Tab will probably make a good ebook reader. That explains why Amazon already has an app for the Galaxy Tab weeks before launch. In fact, the Samsung Galaxy Tab preloads with the Amazon Kindle app and features a Readers Hub, which links to the Kobo ebook store.

Being smaller and lighter will make the Samsung Galaxy Tab easier to hold when reading. It will also read better, because of its higher pixel density. However, like the Apple iPad, the Samsung Galaxy Tab’s display cannot be read under sun light. This is still the edge that the Amazon Kindle reader holds over these tablets.

This model of Samsung Galaxy Tab may no longer be available in Nigeria, but newer models are available. The basic Samsung Galaxy Tab with 7-inch display starts at around N79,000. However, Samsung Galaxy Tab is now available in various display sizes.
