Unlimited Web Hosting – How Unlimited is it

Best Jumia Tech Week Deals

Unlimited web hosting is a marketing jargon used by most services that offer web hosting to describe their cheap shared web hosting plans. Like every jargon, customers new to web hosting often misunderstand what it means. The interpretation new customers give to unlimited hosting is that it offers unlimited or unmetered bandwidth, unlimited or unmetered database, unlimited email, etc, but this is actually far from the reality.

However, resources on a shared server are allocated to multiple user accounts. This means that the usage of each user is monitored to ensure that the resources they are using does not negatively affect other websites hosted on the server.

Unlimited hosting offered by most affordable shared hosting providers like Hostinger and Bluehost are designed for websites with average traffic like business websites and niche blogs.

What is Unlimited Web Hosting

Although most web hosting companies specifically write unlimited bandwidth, unlimited storage, etc for some of their cheapest web hosting plans, this should not be read literally.

When reading such specs on your web hosting details page, replace unlimited with unlimited for intended use. Which simply means that if you use the unlimited hosting plan for the type of application it was designed for it will appear unlimited.

Cheap web hosting is usually targeted at small or micro businesses and blogs, so they are designed to meet the needs of such businesses. If you are building a website that would attract less than 100,000 visitors per month, you are probably okay with unlimited cheap hosting.

However as your number of visitors increase you may start having problems with your hosting company unless you upgrade to a more appropriate web hosting plan.

Another issue to consider is that unlimited web hosting is usually based on shared servers. While the web hosting company promises you unlimited database and bandwidth it limits your use of other more critical server resources like RAM and processor power, which you are sharing with other websites on the server.

So, once your website starts using too much of these resources, the web hosting company will have no options but to limit your use of the server in order to ensure that other websites sharing the server with you also get a fair share of the server resources.

So, if you are planning to build a website or a web or mobile application, analyse the requirements of your website and choose a web hosting plan that meets the need of your website today and into the future.

It is also a good idea to choose reliable web hosting plans that can easily offer you more server resources via an upgrade as your visitors grow rather just focusing on the unlimited hosting keyword.
