The Mi 4i is a cool smartphone that epitomises Xiaomi’s rising reputation of making devices that deliver superb value for money and its global ambition. The Xiaomi Mi 4i is more or less like the global variant of the Xiaomi Mi 4 that will first launch in India and flaunts an ultra-slim design and is driven by a powerful processor, while also supporting dual SIMs and 4G connectivity.

Build and Display

With plastic featuring conspicuously in its construction, the Xiaomi Mi 4i looks chic and compact. The smartphone is thinner than its twin at a thickness of just 7.8 millimetres, compared to the Mi 4’s 8.9 millimetres.

At only 130 grams, Xiaomi Mi 4i is also significantly lighter than the Mi 4. It rocks steel power and volume buttons on its right side as well as the same 5-inch display. The Full-HD (1080p) screen with 441 ppi has a Sunlight mode, which adjusts contrast of the display when in the sun to significantly improve readability.

Camera and Storage

Xiaomi Mi packs an impressive 13-megapixel Sony/Samsung camera with F2.0 aperture. The shooter features an intelligent, two-tone LED flash – an improvement on the single LED flash on the Xiaomi Mi4 – to enhance image qualities in different light conditions.

Although it is less powerful than the snapper on the earlier device, the 5-megapixel front-facing camera should still produce good quality selfies. Onboard storage on the Xiaomi Mi 4i is 16GB and there is no microSD slot for memory expansion due to the phone’s ultra-slim profile. But the Chinese company is contemplating a 64GB model.

Power and Performance

Equipped with a second-generation, octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, Xiaomi Mi 4i is designed to deliver a highly responsive performance. The 64-bit chip, with four cores running at 1.1GHz and another four running at 1.7GHz, is backed by 2GB of RAM.

The choice of processor ensures users can enjoy the 64-bit support of the Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system overlaid with Xiaomi’s MIUI 6 interface.

Xiaomi Mi 4i packs a battery with a slightly larger capacity of 3120 mAh. It supports two SIMs (dual standby) and super-fast 4G connectivity. The smartphone comes with energy-efficient Bluetooth 4.1 and three-time faster Wi-Fi 802.11ac.

Pricing and availability

Xiaomi currently does not sell mobile phones in Nigeria. According to Xiaomi the focus of their expansion for 2015 will be India, Brazil, and Indonesia. However, the company expects to be global by 2020.
