Design and Display

The same premium construction of the Huawei Mate 7 is retained here, although the aluminium chassis appears to be sturdier this time around. Given its size, the Huawei Mate 8 is respectable at a thickness of 7.9 millimetres and weight of about 185 grams.

The Huawei Mate 8 packs a massive 6-inch display with 2.5D curved glass and a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. With a pixel density of 367 ppi, the screen on this tablet of a phone should deliver enjoyable viewing considering it is based on IPS LCD technology, although the pixel count is not the best in this range.

The Cameras

Huawei Mate 8 Rear View

Huawei Mate 8 has been given a boost in the camera department, compared to its predecessor. The handset sports a robust 16-megapixel rear-facing camera from Sony. The snapper has an aperture size of f/2.0 and comes with features such as dual LED flash, phase detection autofocus and optical image stabilisation (OIS) for some serious shot-taking capability.

The selfie shooter has also been upgraded to 8 megapixels, up from 5 megapixels. Both cameras on the Huawei Mate 8 can be used to record Full HD (1080) videos.

Hardware and Software

For more convincing performance, Huawei Mate 8 is equipped with a newer, stronger HiSilicon Kirin 950 octa-core processor that runs at speeds of up to 2.3 GHz, as against the maximum 1.8GHz speed of the older Kirin 930 CPU on the previous-generation handset.

The heavy-duty CPU features an i5 co-processor for speech recognition, low MP3 power consumption and lower location-based power consumption.

The processor comes with a stronger ARM Mali-T880 MP4 GPU and an LTE Cat 6 radio, with support provided by up to 4 GB of RAM. The Huawei Mate 8 will be made available in four variants with 32GB, 64GB or 128GB onboard storage with differentiated internals.

It boots latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow, coated with Huawei’s latest Emotion UI 4.0 skin.

Huawei Mate 8 still features the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for extra security. It is served with needed juice by a massive 4000mAh battery, which is surprisingly a little less powerful than the unit on the Mate 7.
