The Google Pixel Fold is a foldable smartphone that was announced by Google on May 11, 2023. It is the first foldable smartphone from Google and is designed to compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X. It has a dual AMOLED display, excellent performance, stunning camera system, strong impressive hinge, improved sensors, long-lasting battery with fast charging feature.

Google Pixel Fold

Design

The Google Pixel Fold showcases an impressive design and solid construction, reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4. With its book-like folding mechanism, the device unfolds to unveil a spacious and immersive 7.6-inches display, thus, delivering a seamless user experience.

Compared to other foldable smartphones, the Google Fold has the thinnest profile measuring 158.7 x 139.7 x 5.8 mm when unfolded and 139.7 x 79.5 x 12.1 mm when folded. Additionally, with a weight of 283 grams, it offers a lightweight and portable experience for users on the go.

The Google Pixel Fold also incorporates a robust hinge mechanism constructed with a multi-alloy steel design. This hinge enables smooth and seamless movement throughout its entire 180° range of motion.

As a result, users can enjoy the flexibility of various positions, including the convenient “Tabletop mode” or “Flex Mode,” similar to what Samsung offers. This functionality allows for comfortable video watching or efficient typing with the device half-folded, enhancing the overall user experience.

On the back of the Pixel Fold, you’ll find a vertically aligned triple-camera setup, resembling the design of the Google Pixel 7 Pro. The rear panel of the device is crafted from polished aluminum material, giving it a sleek and refined appearance with a matte finish. There is also the ever familiar G logo in the middle.

The Pixel Fold has a water-resistant rating of IP68. This means that it can withstand being submerged in water for up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. It is available in three colors: Stormy Black, Sorta Sunny, and Kinda Coral.

Display

The Google Pixel Fold has a dual camera. The inner display features a large 7.6-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1840 x 2208 pixels, while the outer display has a pocket-friendly 5.8-inch panel with 1080 x 2092 pixels.

Both display is built on OLED display panel and has a 120Hz refresh rate, which makes it smooth and responsive. The display also has a high contrast ratio, which makes it look vibrant and colorful.

Furthermore, the Google Pixel Fold offers impressive display capabilities. The outer display supports HDR content with a peak brightness of 1200 nits (HBM) and a remarkable 1550 nits peak brightness, ensuring vibrant and lifelike visuals even in bright lighting conditions.

On the other hand, the inner display boasts HDR10+ support, providing enhanced color accuracy and dynamic range. It has a peak brightness of 1000 nits (HBM) and a remarkable 1450 nits peak brightness, delivering stunning visuals with deep blacks and brilliant highlights. These display are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

Camera

Similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4, the Google Pixel Fold is equipped with a total of five cameras, ensuring versatile photography capabilities.

At the rear, you’ll find a triple camera setup, there’s also a front-facing camera located at the top of the main foldable display, housed within a punch-hole cutout. Lastly, a fifth camera is positioned on the cover display, enabling quick snapshots and convenient photography when the device is folded.

The rear camera setup consists of a 48 MP wide-angle lens with a wide aperture of f/1.7, , Dual Pixel PDAF, Laser AF, and OIS, thus providing excellent low-light performance and depth of field. Additionally, there’s a 10.8 MP telephoto lens with Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS, and 5x optical zoom for capturing detailed shots from a distance, and a 10.8 MP ultrawide lens with a wide field of view of 121 degrees, perfect for expansive landscapes and group photos.

On the front, the Google phone has a single 8 megapixels wide selfie camera lens. However, on the outer screen, there is a 9.5 megapixels wide cover camera which can also serve as a selfie camera.

Lastly, you can record 4K videos on both the main and cover camera. Slow Motion recording is also supported on the main offering 960fps at 720p HD video recording.

Hardware and Software

The Google Pixel Fold is powered by the same processor as the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, the advanced Google Tensor G2 chipset built on a 5 nm architecture. This powerful processor ensures smooth and efficient performance for a seamless user experience.

The octa-core CPU configuration consists of two high-performance Cortex-X1 cores clocked at 2.85 GHz, two Cortex-A78 cores running at 2.35 GHz, and four energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores operating at 1.80 GHz.

This chip is backed up by Mali-G710 MP7 GPU, which provides excellent graphics processing capabilities. It deliver smooth and immersive visuals, making it perfect for gaming, multimedia content, and other graphic-intensive tasks.

Additionally, the Pixel Fold support up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. However, it does not support external storage cards. The Google Pixel Fold packs a 4,821 mAh battery, which is slightly larger than Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, but lacking compare to the 5000mAh on Tecno Phantom V Fold.

The Google Pixel Fold runs on Android 14, which is the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. Android 14 is a major update that includes a number of new features and improvements, regular security updates, clean and simple interface.

Above all, the Pixel Fold has a number of connectivity options, including 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and USB-C Type-C 3.2.
