Samsung SleepSense, launched at IFA 2015, is an interesting ‘smart home’ device that is designed to help you get the best of sleep in a manner no other tracker has done so far. It is an Internet of Things (IoT) device that can also communicate with and control the appliances in your home.
Description and Sleep Tracking
Parading a cylindrical shape, the SleepSense is a contactless sensor that is placed under the mattress and tracks the sleep quality of the individual lying on top. It senses when you sleep, get off your bed or if you are restless while you sleep.
The sleep tracker monitors your respiratory and heart rates and transfers gathered information to a companion app, which does analysis and produce sleep reports.
A sleep score is generated based on seven major metrics, which include total time asleep, how often you woke up and percentage of time in deep sleep.
Samsung SleepSense app can show you how your data compare to people of similar age and provide recommendations on what you can do to improve your sleep quality to keep health issues at bay. The Korean manufacturer of the IoT device says it worked with a Harvard medical professor when making it.
Home Appliance Tracking
Samsung SleepSense fits in well into the Internet of Things ecosystem with its ability to communicate with compatible appliances in the home. You could be listening to music on your radio while trying to sleep and the device will communicate to it to go off when you eventually fall asleep.
Samsung touted the ability of the SleepSense tracker to communicate with your smart TV to turn it off when you doze off. The sleep tracker can also connect with your air conditioner for a better quality sleep.
The sleep tracker can tell your coffee maker to start up as soon as you get out of bed. If you do not have smart appliances made by Samsung, the company’s SmartThings hub can be used to ensure compatibility of IoT devices from other makers.
There is an intelligent alarm to wake you up slowly. The alarm is set off at around the time observed as best based on your sleep cycles. Samsung SleepSense will work well for families with elderly members.
The SleepSense device app has a ‘family care’ option that lets you monitor the sleep of another person, with an analysis report sent to your email box.
