Jumia Global is an expansion of the Jumia’s program that allows third party sellers to sell on the website. Jumia Global allows merchants who are not located in Nigeria to sell at the online store.
The program was introduced in 2016, but in 2017, Jumia started adding the Shipped from Overseas and Jumia Global badge on products offered by merchants not located in Nigeria to help consumers better identify such products.
Earlier, we discussed Jumia Local, a program that allows local entrepreneurs to sell their products online. Here, we will be discussing Jumia Global.
Jumia Global allows you buy products from abroad and pay in Naira. You do not need to worry about foreign exchange rates or custom duty, just order, pay with your card, and the item will be delivered to you.
Why Ship from Overseas
There are some brands of phones and electronics that are not available in Nigeria even though there specification will work in the country. In addition, sometimes it takes forever for certain premium products to launch in Nigeria.
For example, if you need a new Xiaomi phone now like the Xiaomi Mi 8 or the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S, your best bet is to ship from abroad. Products from brands like UMiDigi, Elephone, Meizu, and VKWorld are not likely to launch in the country, but there are Jumia Global merchants offering such products.
Of course, you can choose to go to international retailers like Gearbest and AliExpress for such products. However, with Jumia Global you will pay in Naira and will not worry about dollar exchange rates. Another advantage is that the custom duty are all factored into the listing price.
Jumia Global – Quick Notes
The first thing to note about Jumia Global is that the item you are ordering is not in Nigeria. So, it will take a bit longer to ship it into Nigeria. According to Jumia, products with the Shipped from Abroad badge takes between 5 to 19 business days to be delivered. You can track your order once it is confirmed by the seller.
Another note worthy information is that you pay for your order with your ATM/debit cards. Payment on delivery is not supported for products shipped from abroad. For the Jumia Global FAQ page, click here.
A Word of Caution
Buying products from abroad comes with a number of issues. While Jumia Global takes away a number of the challenges like foreign exchange wahala and custom duties, a few still remains.
First, the product you are buying may not be built for Nigeria, so it is not covered by any manufacturer warranty. Sellers do not also offer any form of warranty, except if the product was delivered defective.
Secondly, you can only return a product in two situations. One is if you got the wrong product. The next case is if the product was delivered defective.
Thirdly, because, the products offered by Jumia Global merchants were not specifically built with Nigeria in mind, it will be a good idea to make sure the specs will work for Nigeria.
Although it is likely the sellers and perhaps Jumia have done some research to ensure the product will work in Nigeria, it will not hurt for you to do more research.
For example when buying a 4G phone, it will be great to make sure the smartphone will support 4G networks in Nigeria like Airtel, Glo, MTN, Etisalat, and NTel.
Finally, once you place an order with a Jumia Global merchant, you cannot cancel the order. So, make sure you have made up your mind before placing an order.
