My Passport SSD: The Backup Drive that Saved my Business

Best Jumia Tech Week Deals

If there is one thing people know about me, it’s that I carry my laptop everywhere. Everything I have, everything I do, everything I work on, is on that laptop, it has been a constant companion right from my university days even now it helps me navigate the uncharted waters of entrepreneurship.

So, it came as a shock to me when my laptop suddenly started hanging. I went into panic mode. As a new start-up, I only just started growing my client list, so I could not afford to lose key information this way.

I quickly checked my storage and to my dismay, I saw that my laptop storage was full. With limited time and client’s expectant for results, I began the search for a reliable hard drive.

I eventually settled for Western Digital’s My Passport SSD after a ton of research. If you are scouting the market for a backup drive, look no further, get comfortable while I spill the tea on why this drive is perfect for entrepreneurs like me.

There are four drive models for My Passport SSD, but I bought the 500GB storage capacity that comes with a 5-year warranty! (Hard to believe right). Other capacities available are: 1TB, 2TB and 4TB, depending on what your storage needs might be.

Inside the box, I saw the Western Digital My Passport SSD (USB 3.2 Gen 2), USB-C cable and USB-A adapter housed in a white casing with a quick install guide.

I loved the design of The My Passport SSD at first sight. It is sleek, small, and snazzy and comes with what is called an ‘anodized’ aluminum frame. It is also very lightweight when you pick it up and feels great in the hand, so I found it easy to put it in my bag or pocket.

Although it comes in four colors-gray, gold, red and blue, I quite like the gray one because it has such an elegant look and matches my aesthetic (lol). It has a textured wave pattern design that covers most of the bottom and top.  My Passport SSD measures 0.4 by 3.5 by 1.8 inches (HWD) and has rounded corners, weighing just 1.7 ounces.

The drive is shock and vibration resistant, with a drop resistance of up to 6.5 feet, which makes it very durable. This really works for me because I am always on-the-go it fits into my lifestyle whether I’m traveling, working at an event or outdoors.

After using the My Passport SSD for a long period, I noticed that it became warm to the touch, however the metal casing was doing a great job as a heat sink.

My Passport SSD performs at 1050 MB/s of read speed and 1000MB/s of written velocity, making it easy and faster to transfer files from my laptop to drive and vice versa. The connection type is USB 3.2 Gen 2, which supports a maximum throughput of 10Gbps. My Passport SSD also boasts a 256-bit AES hardware encryption and is compatible with Mac® and PC computers without having to install additional software.

However, I must point out that the USB-C cable included with the device is very short and made connecting to my USB port a little difficult. For an iMac or PC, I advise you leave the cable hanging or buy a lengthy cable to make things easier.

Western Digital preloaded My Passport SSD with WD Discovery Software for Windows and MacOS for backup and password protection. With the WD Discovery Software, you can set up the backup to all your computer devices and check your device’s health and functionality.

The software also allows you to easily back up large files such as videos, high resolution images, etc. to the disk or data cloud. This came in handy when I wanted to backup all my private information, including birth certificates, my NIN card and other sensitive pieces of information. I feel so relieved knowing that I can securely store all this data there and free up space on my laptop

When I tried to install the WD Discovery Software, a prompt appeared asking if I would like to share app activity and crash information with Western Digital for product improvement. The options were “Do Not Share” and “Share Info”. I chose “Share Info” and the process worked. After installing, I opened the WD Discovery software and followed the prompt to complete setting up the account.

After sending all the files, projects, and sensitive information, I was able to free up space on my laptop and it started to function perfectly. It also gave room for me to organize how I save files on my laptop and hard drive.

In conclusion, My Passport SSD is a go-to solid state drive, it delivers on its promise of “accelerated performance, taking durability to a greater height” whilst protecting all your important information. It has made business activities easy for me, as I can carry the drive anywhere with me and store my business projects and folders on the drive.

With superior read and write operations, your choice of four colors, a textured, anodized-aluminum frame and 256-bit AES hardware encryption, the WD My Passport SSD 2020 is one of the best external solid state drives I have used. Its on-par speed and capacity, and backup and password protection also make it the perfect fit for travelers and business executives, as well a great choice for a quick-access media library.

Western Digital’s My Passport SSD can be purchased on Western Digital’s website and is available in various local and international online stores. I bought mine online from the Western Digital Store.
