Etisalat customers in Lagos and other locations have for the past few weeks been reporting 3G access, this launch makes it official. According to the press release from Etisalat, the new 3G service will be available in 14 cities namely Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Kaduna, Zaria, Warri, Enugu, Aba, Awka, Nnewi, Onitsha and Benin. Etisalat 3G will cover more towns and cities within the next six months.

Etisalat, despite offering just EDGE data services, continually received praise from users for the quality of their internet services. So, one would expect that their 3G services will probably rank amongst the best. Expectedly, Etisalat also went for the latest 3G technology HSPA+ (3.75G), which offers blazingly fast speed of up to 42Mbps. Users who have ignored Etisalat so far because of the limitations of EDGE are likely to begin reconsideration. In all, 3G on Etisalat makes it a lot more competitive in the marketplace. HSPA+ on Etisalat makes it a no brainer.

Etisalat launched in Nigeria in 2008. It had only a GSM license at launch hence it was only able to deploy EDGE data services. However, in 2010 December, Etisalat agreed to purchase 3G license from Alheri Mobile Services Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of the Dangote Group. It is this 3G license that has now made it possible for this launch of Etisalat 3G services to take place today, September 26, 2011.
